I have a 1986 944 that has developed a pecking sound coming from the
engine.  This occured after replacing the valve stem seals.  I cannot
figure out what is causing it.  If anybody has any info please let me
know.
Thank you.

Your mechanic probably did not put the tappets back into their
original position in the cam housing. One of them is probably
sticking.  Try some valvoline motor oil.  Cured a similiar problem I
had.  Otherwise get a stethoscope and zero in on the problem
tappet/valve.

Thanks for the info.  What kind and weight of valvoline do you suggest
and how long should it take for the noise to calm down?  Again,
thanks.

Thanks for the info,  If the lifters have been put back in out of
sequennce will changing the oil correct the problem and what
kind/weight of valvoline do I need? Thanks

I would recommend 30 single weight depending on where you live of
course.  If in cold weather zone use 20W-50.  It may cure the problem.
You will know right away if you have a cure.  Otherwise try living
with it for a while and see what happens.  If it is affecting the
operation of the engine you need to shift the tappets around before
you burn a valve.
