My 944 idles high and as everything else is in good shape and it
only happens *after* the car is warmed up, I think it's the TPS. It
bugs me that everything I've read simply says to replace it, but
doesn't say what goes wrong with the old one. Anyone know what causes
them to fail after a mere 150k miles? ;)
If the part can't be fixed or is so cheap repairing it doesn't make
sense compared to replacement that's one thing, but I don't like just
swapping parts willy-nilly.

TPS units are just a rheostat, with increasing resistance
through the range of movement. If you want to do some
sort of bench test, you can use an ohm meter and look for
a smooth increase of resistance as you move the TPS actuator.
(realisticly you may not be able to see if your TPS is just
a little off, only if it has "dead" spots)
Usually they fail due to a change of resistance in certain positions
like at idle (where the sensor sits *most* of the time) it just builds
up resistance at the point of contact on the resistance coil.
Why do you think the TPS is the cause of your high idle?
I usually see the cause a flat spot (fall on your face off idle).

switch that goes bad

You need to check your vacuum lines for leaks and be certain there is
an O ring on the oil filler cap.

the microswitch inside the TPS goes bad, the contacts wear out....

why do you think it's the switch and not a vac leak or a sticky air bleed
valve? I don't know the 83s well, but I'd start by looking at those factors
