Searching for a water leak in the (usual) passenger floorboard,
we have sprayed water in every place imaginable including the
battery compartment, and making sure that the battery tray had
the proper drainage tube and was functional, etc., etc. Still cannot
find the source of the leak.....But....on Clarks Garage web site
I see that the 85.5 944 is supposed to have a
BATTERY TRAY COVER !!!!!!!!!!
Well! Never in any pictures have I seen or heard of a battery cover -
and owning this car for a little over a year, I've never even noticed a
picture of a battery cover. I know this may sound crazy but some
of you guys that are still trying to find this mystery leak source....
well, be sure your battery has a lid on it! This still might not be the
place where all my water is coming from but........
(anyone know where I can find one?)

dealer sells it, it's about $6 if I remember right - helps prevent
electrical shorts, but it won't affect your leak

Do you get water tumbling from the sill area when you open the door after
rain? This is a common problem with 944s where the leading edge of the
door seal does not make proper contact with the door pillar, allowing
water to run down the pillar and build up on the sill INSIDE the bottom
run of the seal. Eventually it builds up deep enough to enter the
footwell. I fix this problem by packing out the door seal so that it make
firm contact with the door pillar.
