Tech Help Please - 924/944 Flywheel Noise / Vibrations

On a 1986 924s (944) I can see that I need to change a heavy rubber
piece that goes in between the fly wheel and another wheel inside the
flywheel housing.

My questions are:
1) What is that other wheel called?
2) Is this a form of a tranny balancer? Car trembles a lot in drive
now. (Also extremely noisy)
2) What is that rubber piece called (a dampner)?
3) How hard is it going to be to change this part? To give you an idea
of my experience, I've changed the water pump, timing, and balance
shaft belts on this car. Can anybody offer instructions?
4) What should I expect to pay for this part at Porsche? Is there an
aftermarket substitute?
5) And lastly, apart from making a lot of noise and a trembling
tranny, should I expect any other problems from driving the car?

TIA, John

I think you're looking at the Flex Disc.  It is a very simple dampner by
design, but mine ran me about $800.00 in '96.  It goes between the engine
and the torque tube.  Total bill from the mechanic was about $1250.00.  My
car also got bumpy and had a clunk.  Hope this helps.

presuming your car is a manual trans, not auto, I agree with doug, you need
to replace clutch disk.  DO NOT drive the car, you are at risk for
destroying the transmission as well.  instructions for changing clutch are
in the service manual, the link has been posted many times - download it and
read it.  to summarize:

disconect rear axles
remove tail pipe and muffler, including cat
remove transmission
remove shift lever and linkage
remove flywheel sensors, slave cyl, starter
support rear of engine with floor jack, unbolt bell housing, remove
R&R clutch
reassemble

I agree also on doug's time estimate if you are good.  if you are not, it
could take you twice that easily.

Sorry guys, forgot to mention that it is an automatic...

Do the instructions apply anyways?

Thanks, John

the instructions are basically correct, but the details are different -
download the service manual that's available on teh web and read it
CAREFULLY.  the trans will be heavy - you will need a trans jack or a friend
and a floor jack.

John,

If it's an automatic, then it is definitely your flex disk.  Definitely an
overpriced part, but shop the internet and you may survive it.  Best of
luck.
