84 HEAT, OVERHEATING QUESTION

Hi,
I am a brand new owner of a 1984 944
the car had been sitting for 9 months but it started and ran no problem and
made the eleven hour jurney home.
This morning I found the battery dead in my reguler car and thought I might
as well take the porsche to work since it had done so well the day before.
Just as I pull into the parking lot the heater starts blowing cold air. I
figure either the belt to the water pump went, or I sprung a leeak and am
out of coolant.
After work I check, the belts look fine and I have coolant and the car seems
normal. A couple miles out of town the car overheats. I figure my water pump
went and I limp along for an hour, stopping letting the car cool and then
going a mile or so. While I am sitting waiting for a cool down I remember
that the belt to the water pump seemed to loop around the A/C, I flip the
A/C on and off a few times and the car no longer overheats, but I still have
absolutely no heat, and it is cold out.
Has anyone ever heard anything like this?, and how should I go about getting
heat again?
Thanks
Peter

The belt driving the water pump is INSIDE the plastic cover on the
front of the engine.  You might invest in a Haynes Manual so that you
understand the engine.
I would guess that your cooling system has air blockage.  You might
need to bleed    air out of the system.  Go over to
www.clarks-garage.com and read up on the procedure.  Also, do your
electric fans come on when the engine heats up?
