If the balance shaft belt is broken you would know about it at less
than 3000rpm.
To be on the safe side I would not drive the car. If there is a broken
belt it could get tangled up with the cam belt, break it and cause
damage to the valves as the pistons run into them.
Tow the thing.
My mechanic found mine when replacing my water pump. When I got my car, I
thought the roughness was typical of a 4 cyl. After he replaced the time
and balance shaft belts it was smooth as butter. I guess what I'm getting
at is that I drove mine for months not knowing it had a problem. However, I
may have just been lucky.

it is an easy matter to check this.
remove the front cover (timing belt cover) and check for anything obvious.
also does the vibration go when the clutch is engaged, iof so its not
engine, its further down the drive train.
does the gearshift shudder as well, if so this is indicitive if the belts
not being correctly tensioned
