I'm getting a knock when shifting in the lower gear range.  Doesn't
happen every time, but consistently enough to be annoying.  It's
gotten worse over the past year or so.  This is my first 944, and my
first manual trannie.  What up?

When was the clutch serviced? If you don't have any records showing it's been replaced, it's probably due.

You MIGHT know your sh.t, but you certainly don't carry yourself like you
do!  If a mechanic said that to me I'd grab my keys back and sprint back to
my car.
