Get a gauge and check the fuel pressure at the rail. 25-35 psi
If you are seeing spark in the plugs then ignition is not the problem.
The computer controls the timing.
NO, there is no relation between the existance of compression and whether
the car moves in first gear - buy, borrow or rent a compression tester. If
you measure 0 on all cylinders, you have no compression and you know what
your problem is.
Timing - to check timing, verify that the timing mark on the cam (on the S,
it's at the back of the pulley seen through a plug in the top) is aligned
with the mark when the OT on the flywheel is aligned with the timing
pointer.

Your problem is very similar to mine but I went as far as changing the fuel
pump, dme relay, ignition wires, coil, distributor caps and all the fu.
What you need to check is your coil, if you coil receive power but does not
output anything to the distributor this may be caused by a couple of things:
-Faulty speed sensor and Reference Mark sensor (both located above the bell
housing)
-Your DME unit is faulty.
I would definately check the sensors because they have a bad reputation of
going on the fritz for no reasons.
Good Luck

note that the S also uses a hall effect sensor on distributor that the NA
doesn't use
