Just bought an 86 Turbo 2 days ago and I have a couple questions. I
hope someone might be able to help.
1. How does the factory car alarm work? The dealer gave me a key chain
with several keys on it. I assumed one of them would work the alarm on
the rear quarter panel but none of them seem to work. Should the same
key I use to turn on the car also be used to turn on the alarm? When I
put the keys in the lock they dont turn. Can anyone offer insight on
this? On a side note can i install an alram that automatically opnes
and locks the doors? And on another side note what is the best way to
protect my car from theft.....alarm.....The Club....iginition
kill.....LoJack....??
2. From inside the car the doors dont open when pulling the latch when
they are locked, Should they? Or do I always have to unlock the door by
hand and then pull the latch to get it open. Seems pretty inconvenient.
3. Last night I needed to use the headlights and was shocked when they
opened and then immediately pointed downward illuminating the ground
right in from of the car. Seems like the headlights just need to be
aligned or "straigtend out" so they shine ahead of the car instead of
at the ground. How can this be done?
4. What the hell is up with the heater. I almost incinerated myself
this morning. That thing can really blow some heat.
5. When the car is at idle the oil gauge shows about 3 and bounces
around a little but under acceleration it pegs at 5. Is this normal?
6. The odometer stopped working but was working yesterday. Is there an
easy fix?
7. The stereo has a casette but no CD. Any recommendations on the type
of CD stereo I should get? Also the right rear speaker isnt working?
How do I replace it?
8. I have the spre tire rim but tire. What size should the spare be?
Thanks to anyone who is able to help.

you turn it on, if disturbed it kills the ignition and honks hte horn

you will need to get a replacment alarm swtich from Porsche

no
>When I

normal, wrong keys
>Can anyone offer insight on

if you have the power locking system installed that locks the doors when
you turn the door key, or lock thme by pushing a rocker swich on the console

don't park it where it can be stolen

normal, you need to unlock them when on the inside from the rocker
switch on the console

do the headlights rise full up then continue to partially close, if so
you need to have the headlight motor readjusted

normal

nope, have to pull the instrument cluster and dissassembly the speedo
and replace a gear

any standard "din" size unit will fit

you have to pop out the plastic side panel

a shrunk spare, not enough space for a full size

From what I am told, those factory alarms with the key on the outside freeze
up or usually dont work at all. With your car turning 20 this year, and
unless you want to have it bone stock, forget the factory alarm and go
aftermarket.
<On a side note can i install an alram that automatically opnes and locks
the doors?>
If you have central locking, yes, a relay will be provided off of any good
car alarm system.
>And on another side note what is the best way to protect my car from theft>
Kill all car thieves? Aside from that, a passive system that arms up after
30 seconds and scrambles the code should be sufficient.
<2. From inside the car the doors dont open when pulling the latch when they
are locked, Should they?>
No, they don't. It is a theft prevention feature. Most cars are this way.
<3. Last night I needed to use the headlights and was shocked when they
opened and then immediately pointed downward illuminating the ground right
in from of the car. Seems like the headlights just need to be aligned or
"straigtend out" so they shine ahead of the car instead of

Alignment screws on the headlight.
<4. What the hell is up with the heater. I almost incinerated myself this
morning. That thing can really blow some heat.>
Then it is working perfectly.
<5. When the car is at idle the oil gauge shows about 3 and bounces around a
little but under acceleration it pegs at 5. Is this normal?>
Completely normal. On a hot day, you may drop to 1 bar.
<6. The odometer stopped working but was working yesterday. Is there an easy
fix?>
Plastic gear replacement, someone here will give you the link.
<7. The stereo has a casette but no CD. Any recommendations on the type of
CD stereo I should get?>
Anything fits, but go to higher quality because the 944 ride is a bit rough.
<Also the right rear speaker isnt working?
How do I replace it?>
It may just be the wheel down by the shifter. Check it from there first.
Replacing it is a bear. Just mount 2 6X9's in the rear deck and be done with
it!
<8. I have the spre tire rim but tire. What size should the spare be?>
You have an offset, so, you should get the factory spare because your front
and rear tires are different.

I suppose if I did have central locking I would know it but if by some
chance I have overlooked some button where would it be?

Right....duhhhhhhh.....but its so dam hard to open the lock since its
got nothing to grab on to....

ha ha....I was wondering what the hell that button was...forgot to ask
but now I know...thanks

I have had the same problem you noted in #3. The problem is dirty contacts
in the headlight motor relay. The relay is located inside a rubber boot on
the motor where the wire goes to the motor. You can remove the boot and the
relay and then carefully remove the cover on the relay itself. For a
temporary fix, use some very very fine 1500 grit sandpaper to clean the
contacts (both normally open and normally closed) but $10 or so will buy you
a new relay. This seems to be just a temporary fix as after I cleaned my
contacts they were OK for a few months but the problem returned. This is
also the cure for headlights that reopen and cycle when you want them
closed.
For info on lots of problems and fixes see http://www.clarks-garage.com/
Click on "Garage Shop Manual"
Your oil pressure sounds OK if it runs at 3 with the engine warm at idle. I
think Clarks Garage has a section on proper oil pressure.
If your odometer stays broken Clarks Garage has a section explaining the
problem and the cure.
