well, i know that it is recommended to have the timing belt changed every
50,000 miles. so, i think its about that time. i've put about 20,000 on
it, and i dont know how many were put on it the last time it was changed.
so, it could be long overdue. what i need to know is about how much it
will cost to have it done at the dealership. also, im not sure if the
balance shaft sprockets are good. i still havent looked into my vibration
issue. if i have to have those changed out, new belts for the balance
shafts, and a timing belt, about what will that run me? any other
additional help would be great. thanks!

Seems I recall seeing a Porsche dealer in these parts (se Michigan) asking
$400 for the timing belt, assuming no other part than the belt. Independents
should be charging a little less

You are on WAY borrowed time. They should be replaced every 30k miles.
The rollers and such should be replaced every 60k miles. So don't
be suprised if your mechanic recommends it.
And once replaced, they must be retensioned after 2-3k miles. Some
have them retensioned at 15k miles too.

Find an independant Porsche mechanic that knows 944s. Dealer will charge
you an extra arm and leg, and are more interested in warrantee repairs on
new cars than they are on 944s.
Please note that the proper way to set the tension on the belts is with
a special $$$$ Tool, designed for 944s and 928s. Ask them to show you the
tool (out of curiosity, of course! :) as not every mechanic will have one.
Some may claim that they can use alternative tensioning gauges or 'by feel'.
Take these claims with the proper-sized grain of salt.

I was checking the same thing at Rennworks here in the south SF bay area---
Steve looked it up and the book says it is a 4.4 hour job. At their
standard rate of $110 per hour that is about $550 before you buy the parts.
Depending on their cost and profit in the parts you would probably be
looking at $700- $750? I decided to do it myself.

belts. rollers, seals and waterpump will run in the vicinity of $400
from a reputable 3rd party parts house ( like Performance, Zims, Vertex,
Pelican, etc) , add to that the roughly 4-5 hour labor ans you are
looking at near $800-900 ( it cost me $853.26 from a reputable 944
mechanic in the SF bay area for everything on the fornt of the engine)
It is generally suggested that belts be replaced at roughly 30K-40K
intervals (or every two years) and the at the 60-70K (or every four
years)mark you replace the belts, rollers, seals AND waterpump.

ouch. if i knew how to do it myself, i would. but, i dont have the tools or
the know-how to do it myself. i was hoping to only spend a portion of my
tax money. looks like its all going to go away now. then again, since you
guys are in the cali, it may be a little cheaper in ohio. possibly not,
but in my case, i can only hope. thanks for the help though! much
appreciated.

I wouldn't change the water pump at 60K - on my 85.5, the factory water pump
started to leak at 90K, I replaced it, and the replacement was fine when I
gave the car to my brother at over 250K
changing belts is not hard, you could hire a mechanic to show you how and do
it yourself thereafter - I make my daughters do their own, and they both can
do it no problem
