I am about to replace the steering rack on my 87 NA 944.  I have a rebuilt
rack, new boots and new tie rod ends.  Are there any surprises in store for
me?  Looks pretty strait forward from the manual perspective but there is no
substitute for experience.  Any tips/advice will be appreciated.

it's often hard to get the splined shaft for the steering wheel to separate
from the U joint - be sure you remove the bolt all the way.
drain as much fluid out first as you can
don't separate the tie rod ends from the spindles, just unscrew from the
rack
don't forget to slide on the new bellows before you put it all together
(duh!)
don't forget to disconnect/reconnect the ground wire
after reinstalling, fill pump resivoir and manually move wheels side to side
a few times before starting engine
put the cap on the resivoir before starting engine (unless you want fluid
all over the place)

Thank you sir!  Good tips all.  I'll let you know how it goes.  Thanks
again.

The one back hose that makes a sharp curve at the end was hard to get to.
If you have problems you can drop it out with it attached and then take it
off.  You probably know to lock the shaft in neutral with a ball bearing and
a bolt so you can be sure the rack is centered when you hook up the steering
shaft.  (thats what that plastic plug is covering up)
Good Luck!

Thanks for the reminder!  I'll report how it went in a day or two.
