Help! Camshaft!

Sounds like my camshaft or anicilary parts might be dues for replacement.
I'm thinking "ouch" - I assume this is right!

Apparently, the play in the shaft should be 5/1000 inch - it's 1/8 inch -
so that's about 24 times too much.

This was a sudden "failure" - the car still runs fine, but there's a strong
vibration which started without warning or build up. Unlikely to be the
actual shaft then? Possibly washer, bearing or something similar?

How long before a total engine failure, I wonder.

If anyone has had experience with this area, I'd really appreciate a bit of
advice. I've only known for the last 30 minutes, and already my hair's gone
grey.

Warning, if you break the cam belt the pistons will run into the valves
and you will have a real problem...bent valves etc.  Do not run engine
until repaired!
.   You can pull the cam box off in a few hours.  Look for a
replacement on eBay, otherwise very expensive  from dealer.
Check www.clarks-garage.com for procedure.

Year and model?????

1989 n/a

Thanks for the advice - I was thinking about it last night, and the
possibility of that happening to the cambelt occurred to me. I'm glad we
got the car in when we did.

Still waiting for news.

Oh, isn't the telephone a wonderful invention? My mechanic said
"Crankshaft", my earpiece said "Camshaft".

So it's possibly even worse - "possibly"? there's optimism for you.

Funny thing was, I was reading something on the internet (one of the many
forums), and someone was saying "Are you sure you mean Camshaft not
Crankshaft?" - there was me thinking "Huh! Don't they know the difference?
How could they make a mistake like that? Scoff scoff" Well, I'm still
trying to get my foot out of my mouth. At least I'm not the only one!

My mechanic says that it's impossible to tell before looking what the
problem is - which, I have no doubt, is true - still leaves me on
Tenterhooks, though.

Where did you come up with the "1/8 inch play " idea to begin with?  I
find it difficult to believe that there could be that much play in the
main bearing and still have  oil pressure.
Tell us exaclty what the original symptoms were.  You could just have
the balance shaft belt loosen up and slip a notch or two to create a
vibration problem.  Some mechanics can only be trusted as far as you
can throw them.

I've been trusting mine for years. No problems. That's the front/rear play
in the crankshaft. It's way out.
