Hello All:
I am original owner of sapphire blue 1984 944. Over the years been
through a lot - me and the 944. Still runs great and strong. Looks
good too. But that is not the problem. A few years ago - had
rear wheel bearings replaced - both wheels. Now noticing a rumble or
mechanical sound seems to be coming from rear end - has a bit of clunky
quality to it - and as speed increases noise gets louder. Are there
reports of failure or degrading of connection where drive shaft
connects to rear end? Is it possible constant velocity joints could be
cause of this sound? If it is driveshaft - is there a reasonable fix
(in terms of cost). Approx. 150,000 miles - still running on original
clutch.
Thnx.

try and figure out if it's associated with the wheels/axles, or the
differential - on my 95.5, a tooth broke off the pinion gear and destroyed
the transmission - draining the trans oil (changing it is a good idea
anyway) will let you see if there is metal in the oil.
putting the car on jackstands and runninng the engine may help diagnosis

get underneath and try to rotate the rear axles by hand and puh them
front to back and forth, if they move at all then CV joints are shot,
if you get clunking noises while turning either left or right, the CV
joints are shot.

Could be Torque Tube bearings, mine had a similar sound when one of the
races wore and slipped out of place.
