Ok so my '86 lux has finally reached that age when the power steering is
sipping fluid rather too often. It seems I need a new steering rack. Do you
have any advice for performing a re-con job or it is best left to the pros
and just bite the bullet and pay the necessary for a swap part?

Here the swap parts (recon) retail for £250  ($500ish).

What's the procedure for taking it off?

Is it a problem setting up the tracking again afterwards?

Any other jobs I should do at the same time?

Incidentally I have a rear wheel arch that could do with TLC (poorly
repaired old accident damage I reckon) - have you ever heard of part panels
- a whole one is over £700!

Many thanks in advance

Chris

changing the steering rack takes about an hour and a half - detailed
procedures are on the web in several locations and also in the manual -
basically:

drain fluid by disconnecting return line
disconnect ground wire and pull off bellows both sides
unscrew tie rod inner connections
remove bolt holding U joint to steering shaft
remove 4 bolts holding rack to frame
remove bolts to release banjo fitting connected to remaining hose
remove rack (may have to pry u joint)
revers steps to install, be sure to use new seals on banjo fitting
add fluid, move wheels levt and right a few times
start engine (with cover on resivoir), turn wheels left/right, refill fluid,
repeat until no bubbles in resivoir, refilling as needed
