has anyone noticed a significant fuel economy difference when removing
an otherwise unused but still installed air conditioner?

Haven't removed mine, but here is 3 years of mpg data for my car... I do
run the AC when it's hot...  It's my daily driver and I travel a mix of
city and highway miles daily....

Some people say I have too much time on my hands....

and, for what it's worth, I posted about 15 years of MPG for an 85.5 - the
link is in a prior thread on this NG

How about in a internet friendly format... something folks don't have to scan
for viruses first.... a graph perhaps... even though my version of Lotus 123
claims to read .xls files, it can't open your version of excel spreadsheet...

some day I may get around to it, I guess.  you should be able to open that
file in excel or star office - I'ts a few years old now so the office 2000
or later probably has the right version.  I used zip to keep the file size
down, and it's on a "spare" web page because I don't consider it part of the
mission of my "primary" web page (www.wbnoble.com) - there is an aritcle
that I published some years ago about an odd "failure" of my 944, by the
way, that may interest you.

All you’ll save is weight. I imagine there is not much draw on a idle
a/c to make much of a difference in gas mileage.

... and even if the belt were taken off of the a.c, wouldn't the
overall engine balance be off?

p.s. thanks for all the data.

I would say no because your engine is ballanced internally. If there
is no belt on it it would maybe give you 4hp since your alternator
isn’t dragging it down.
william_b_noble - 16 Aug 2005 04:09 GMT
aaah, guys - let's just suppose you are rigght about the 4 hp - now let's
see here, aprox 750 watts per horsepower, so if you were to actually gain 4
HP, that's 3,000 watts of power that previously had been going somewhere.
Now, siince the only change was to stop rotating the pulley on the AC pump,
it means that the bearings on the front of the pump had been eating 3,000
watts.  If your AC pump is not glowing bright red when you stop driving the
car, I'd say that there is no way it's eating 4 HP.  maybe .001 HP (a watt
or so), but no more.
