How long does a 944 last

Hi guys

I'm a 944 (84) owner. For the last 6 years I have used it for daily
driving and only changed the oil on the given intervals. I would say
that it is a quality car. I added 80.000 km to it and 6 years without
any breakdown!

BUT! There are some known problems which are becomming pretty urgent
I have to change the belts and the water pump
The transmission has to be shifted in 3th gear before it is able to
shift it to first gear.
there is a rattle in the back of the car (i suppose it is the
transmission axle)
The clutch sticks (with the clutch in the car starts to move, if you
take the transmission out of gear it stops)
The center of the clutch is bad (vibrations at 3k rpm but it had this
for the last 6 six years)
The clutch "softener" is broken (gives a bang when you loosen the
gaspedal but this is also an old problem)

So with 300.000 km on the clock I'm wondering if it is worth it to
start fixing it or should I just buy a new better one. I am pretty
handy with cars and have a good place to do the repairs. But do you
have an idea of repairs, the cost and time i have to put into it to get
it to near new condion again?

Thanks in advance

I own an 84 944 NA.  It runs quite well today with over 250000 miles.
Uses very little oil and still goes like a BOH.

The basic question you need to consider is how much oil is it using and
what is the oil pressure.

Clutch rebuild is about 2500 dollars if some shop does it.  The parts
if YDI are around 500 and it takes about 12 hours of work.

Of course if the body and interior are in good condition why buy
another car.  After all its still a Porsche 944.  Fine cars and wine
age well and demand respect at any age.

The transmission shifting may be a matter of linkage adjustment.

Thanks for the advice

I'm actually quitte emotionally attached to 944. It's the first car I
had and It is a great car to drive.. So I'm trying to get a reallity
check before starting on an emotional endeavour to fix it.

So what would you think about the following statistics?
The oil consumption is about a liter every 2500 km (about 1800 miles)
It used to be less when I bought it (about 1 liter every 5000 km). The
oil pressure starts at 5 with cold oil and goes down to 2 when the
engine runs idle after 15 -20 minutes of driving. It always goes up to
4-5 when you rev up!

Thanx again....

Oil consumption is fine and pressure is like mine.  I use Valvoline
20W50 per Porsche recommendation.  I would strongly recommend using
Valvoline oils over any other brand.
Your tran problem will probably go away if you stop the clutch from
dragging.  You probably
need a rebuild.  The 944 trypically goes to 300 or 400 thousand miles
before needing rings and main bearings.  The only other thing to watch
for are CV joints and wheel bearings. Don't forget, this is  Porsche,
not some GM crud.

agree with dartpup - I put 250K miles on a 944 and then gave it to my
brother - I he is still driving it - the major failures I had were
clutch (which then destroyed the trans), odometer gear, and a water
pump (at 90K), ignition wires - since I gave it to him, I've changed
oil cooler seals, a couple of hoses, starter.  Change belts as
required, change belt rollers every other belt change, change clutch
before it destroys your trans - my car still has original CV joints,
bearings, muffler, etc - upholstery is getting pretty bad on driver's
seat (he's too cheap to fix it).  Oh, and I repainted it after about
10 years.

Thanx again guys

think I will spend my evenings in the workshop the comming months......

Probably have some questions on the way!

I had a 1983 944 last 550,000 miles - original engine, transmission, brake
cylinders, alternator...that car didnt want to die, until someone ran into
the rear.  100,000 miles to a 944 is like 10,000 miles to another.

And I changed the oil according to the manual - around 8000 miles. and drove
it everyday, rain or snow, New York City and all.

It could be a lifetime car - it seems.  Now I am driving a 1987 - past 250K
miles so far.  That car had many more problems than the 944, but I think now
it is finally broke in.
