I have $25,000. and am wondering which year/model of 911 series, Boxter
or classic Speedster Porsche would be the best one to get for that price
or under?  Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

The kind of Porsche you buy depends on what you want the car for.
If you want an antique you can work on and drive weekends, get a 356
or early 911. If you want a daily driver you won't have to work on
with all the latest features, I'd suggest a 2000 or newer Boxster. If
you just have to have a 911 (which lots of people do), I'd recommend a
low-mileage late Carrera, say 1987-1989 for the G50 transmission.
The money will also get you nice examples of some water-cooled
cars: 944, 944 turbo, and 928S4.

you'll get much more Porsche for your dollar with a 1987 to 1995 928,
either a S4, GT or GTS.  granted its not a 911, but then again, for
$25k, your not going to get much 911, 'cept maybe for nostalgic
purposes.

compare the #s
my 1999 carrera     297hp, 268 lb/ft of torque stock
my old 1988 928s4,  320hp, 320 lb/ft of torque pretty much stock

The 928 is a great car, but a stock 928S4 weighs about 3,650 pounds vs.
your Carrera at about 2,950, so the power/torque comparisons need to be
considered in light of the vehicles' respective weights.

What's the power/weight ratio between the two? For 25 grand, you're
looking at a late-model Carrera with 231 bhp, weighing around 2800
lbs, so that's 12.1 bhp/lb for the 911. Using your specs above, the
928S4 is 11.5 bhp/lb. That makes the 928S4, which is newer, has more
cargo area, and faster, the better buy on paper. There's reduced parts
availability and higher maintenance costs though.
Best buy if you're not looking for a 911? The 944 turbo. You can
get great ones for fifteen grand and upgrade them into big horsepower
monster for another five grand. Say around 2700 lbs and 400 bhp,
putting you at 6.75/hp.

No arguments with your choices, but the original post said he was
looking for a 911, Boxter or " Classic speedster" (356)......

Yeah, I know - the early watercooled cars get the shaft again ;)

Be careful if you look at the 0-60 figures. My 1989 928S4 looked
slower on paper than my current 2003 Boxster S, but felt faster. I
suspect this is because it topped out at 80mph in second. This makes
the figures worse than one geared to give the best possible 0-60 (or
0-100kph) figure, but makes it one hell of an overtaking car.
