Heh. Welcome to MD. Inspection sucks. I had to replace a windshield
in my VW when I moved here because it was "too sandblasted." The only
reason I didn't fight it was it gave me a chance to address the leaks
and consequent rust starting around it.

You can get some products that will clean and condition it somewhat. The
name escapes me now. It will go from white and blurry to clear and blurry.
Hopefully acceptable. I did it to my S2 when I got it, but, since the top
was down 365 days a year, it didn't matter. I did get a new top on eBay for
$300. OEM German. The install will be another matter...

Laugh if you must, but Lemon Pledge furniture polish is great for
reconditioning and upkeep on plastic rear windows. Ran into someone at the
dealership years ago who did all of the top work for the dealer. I was
looking at a Porsche product on the shelf, when he suggested Pledge. Used
it on my '84 911 cab for the past seventeen years. Just replaced the top
because the fabric and backing were worn out, but the rear window was clear
and soft as new.

Mequires makes a great two step plastic cleaner.
they come in small blue and white bottles. The first
step is called plastic cleaner, the second step is the polish.
They also make a single product called "plastix" or something
like that. I have cleaned plastic headlights with that one, and
it worked reasonably well.
