Hello all, i have 2000 Starcraft that has experienced a bump in the roof.
Something has caused a slight indentation in the roof and I need to patch
it. I was thinking of filling the dent w/ silcon caulk and applying a patch
over the caulk w/ epoxy. Has anyone face similar repairs? if so, please
advise if this makes sense or better alternatives.
Thx,
Terry in Arkansas

Is the roof covered with metal, plastic or fiberglass?
Is there a HOLE or TEAR there or just a dent?

Why? Especially if there isn't a hole, do you wish to patch it just to
improve the appearance?
The sheet metal roof on my new Starcraft popup (in 1987) was accidentally
dented at delivery. The "skin" wasn't "breached" so I saw no need to patch
it.

Unless there is a HOLE through which water might leak, I wouldn't mess with
it. Any patch job is likely to deteriorate faster than the roof and would
likely have to be done again - and again.

Thanks Jim. There is a tear and the "skin" is breached , although it does
not appear to be a hole all the way through the roof. the layer beneath the
skin is exposed and I am guessing it could or would leak to the interior if
not patched.

In that case, a patch is essential.
Your plan sounds good to me.
Good luck!

Hi,
One thing to watch out for is trying to epoxy over silicone. Might
not stick. You might want to check that first. There is not to much
that sticks well to silicone.
If it's a smooth surface like fiberglass or aluminum you might be
better off just removing any paint and just patching it using
fiberglass resin body filler like used to repair cars. You can sand
it and make it invisible if you take your time, and it will stick well
to a clean non painted surface.
There is a product called Eternabond. This stuff sticks to anything
and is just about leak proof. That would work to cover the break but
would be very noticeable when the roof was down.

Hi:
Would a camper roof expand and contract enough to cause the epoxy to
crack?

Hi,
Regular epoxy glue might crack. But fiberglass resin and filler
should not crack if used on a fiberglass or flat surface aluminum
roof. It's used on all parts of cars without problems. Of course you
have to use a little common sense and not put it on two inches thick.

Hey this sounds like another use for duct tape.
With duct tape and WD-40 you can fix anything. ;)
gotta go!!!
