Ok, this might be somewhat off-topic, but my wife and I saw this beast
when we were in Utah last summer. It's a gigantic red bus, looks like
it has three levels of bunks in the back and a bunch of seating in the
front. It was loaded with German tourists:

Sorry - that's the best angle I had, since it had to squeeze between
the trees. I've heard people talking about similar things on usenet
(talking about Slamp coaches, and mentioning the german tourists again
:), but I haven't been able to positively identify it. I've never
found another picture of one. Anyone know of a picture online
somewhere?
I think I'll just stick with my plan of getting a popup, unless I can
find 49 of my closest friends to travel the country with me.

we've seen a few of these around Yosemite and Tahoe..
they call them several things, but the best one I've heard so far is "camping
hotel"
it's a huge buss that has (very small) sleeping compartments for a LOT of
folks.. mostly reserved for groups of tourists..

That is a German tour bus. They carry 22 tourist and the driver. The
curb side of the bus folds out to make a changing room and all the
little windows are in the slide out sleeping cubicles. They slide out
to get on the platform, and them slide back in for sleeping -
something around 18 X 18 inches!! The complete kitchen is underneath
on the driver's side. This is the view you have. They prepare all
meals from the bus kitchen. The tourist pitch in and help with all
chores, including setting up the room at night. These busses operate
all over the world, including both North & South America. The 1st one
I saw was in New York City in the mid '70s. I have seen them in Mexico
City and this past summer in Alaska.
