Hi all.

I'm new to this news group and to pop up trailers.  I just purchased a 1986
Bonair BA700.  It is in great condition and requires no work to go camping.
I wanted to get some basic insurance for this trailer, but my insurance
company wants to know the original new price for this trailer before they
will even quote a price!  Any idea how I can get this number?  Anyone have
an educated guess as to the original price?

I'm in Ontario, Canada if it matters.

Thanks in advance.

I'm sure they don't have a clue either... I would forge one up!

Did you go through your car insurance or a specialized RV insurance
company.  Usually, they would insure it from the buying price...not the
original value ?

here in Quebec, even the SAAQ (those emmiting our licence plates) don't
have a clue on the values of RV (new or used...)

I talked to the company that insures our car.  They wanted to know what we
bought it for and the original new price.

I am not aware of specialized RV insurance companies.  I will need to ask
around to see if they exist around here.

You came to the right place.

$1,000CDN

...and you can QUOTE me on that.

Heck, mine is beyond a WILD guess, but you can still quote me on it.

Stupid, jerkwater bureaucrats.

Tell 'em $1k CDN.

Sheesh!

That was my next option!  I.e. make up a number.  Crazy system where they
would make the customer try and figure out a price for an object 19 years
old before they would quote!

Just called my auto insurance... the guy there said to me that he
insures RV for their original value.  maybe that's why he needs this
amount.
The company here in Quebec was called CGU... now I think it's AXA that
covers it... but from what I can see, automobiles insurance figured that
there was good money to do in the RV industry, so they now all offer it.

Think it's time for me to re-negociate the cost.

The company I called quote based on its current value, and do so in
increments, $10,000/$25,000, etc. For an RV I was quoted $476 for a year for
a replacement value of up to $25,000. I don't recall what it was for a
pop-up but it was quite cheap for an inexpensive one. I live in NS, as is my
insurance broker, but I'm pretty sure the quote was from a company in
Ontario.

Here in Manitoba, insurance is based on current replacement value. Our
camper is in the $5,000 to $7,500 range, and it's costing us something
like $125 per year for insurance and registration. Mind you, we have
public insurance here.

here, in Quebec, it's 300$ for my TT, insured for 16000$+tx.  Insurance
also includes 1M$ coverage in case the TT disconnects from the tow
vehicule and hits lets say 5 mercedes and 2 Rolls Royce....
Also included is relocation in an Hotel and Car Rental if the RV and Tow
Vehicule can't be used during a trip.

My current insurance for my tow vehicle covers the TT for liability like in
the train wreck case Mel describes.  For the additional fire/theft/damage
insurance, the insurance company is insisting on both original and current
value.
