I am researching the dangers of the process of hitching a towable object to a tow vehicle. I hope that you will all bear with me for a few minutes and take the time to think about a few questions that I am looking into. I greatly appreciate your time and consideration.
1. Have you, or have you heard of anyone, ever being hurt or possibly even killed when they were attempting to hitching a car, SUV, truck or motor home to any towable object like a boat, travel trailer, horse trailer or utility trailer? If so please tell me in as much detail as you can about it.
2. Have you, or have you ever heard of anyone that damaged their car, SUV truck or motor home when attaching a tow object like a boat, travel trailer, horse trailer or any other type of tow able equipment to it? If so please tell me in as much detail as you can about it.

An alternative possibility is that he has invented a new type of hitch
(or mirror, or other doodad) that will prevent all those non-existent
injuries and deaths, and needs justification for marketing them.
A quick Google for "Curtis Thompson" didn't reveal anything to support
either your idea or mine.

Nothing like that! My father and I have a new hitching device that is a
low-cost, portable wireless camera and monitor that we have patented and I
am trying to do a little market research before we begin marketing it.

What kind of patent claims have you entered for such a device made up of
off-the-shelf parts? Unless your solution is significantly cheaper than the
$250-300 you can already buy a wireless video camera/receiver pair, I'm not
sure you can patent (and protect) the mere idea to aim the camera at a
hitching lash-up like you describe.

Yep, had that one pegged! A solution in search of a problem.

I know usenet can be frustrating, sometimes you simply do not get the sort
of response you wish to get, and you certainly fall in that category. But
you did get some info - a lack of interest. It should tell you something. My
guess is you wont make money on your invention. Sorry.

Ummm.... No, no, and no. For #1 - only if someone was being stupid and/or careless would there even be much of a chance of injury. For #2 - I've heard of lots of dents from jacknifing whilst manuevering the trailer, but never while hitching. See the careless/stupid point above..
Have you ever heard of such injuries/damages? Seems like a pretty remote chance to me...

#1... I've heard of a few folks that got hurt pretty bad by unhitching travel
trailers without using wheel chocks... grade was towards the TV and they got
stuck between the trailer and TV.. OUCH!
#2 (hope my wife doesn't read this) When we had the tent trailer, she was going
to bring the trailer from the camp site to the truck while I was packing the
truck.. (the trailer could be rolled around like a wheel barrel by 1 person)
She didn't realize that there was a slight slope from the campsite to the
parking area and built up a little speed down the slope.. She missed the trailer
ball by about a foot and put a very interesting shaped dent in my tail gate with
the hitch..
When I laughed instead of getting mad, she decided that I was a keeper and we
got married 6 months later.. *g*
