Odd problem

Hi:

This is a bit of an odd problem. The front of the camper (Coleman Rio) has
a
storage area.  It is surrounded on the outside by plastic.  I assume that
this section is NOT under warranty.  I've noticed that in 2 corners the
plastic is slowly tearing.  1 inch in a section and 2 inches in a second
section.

I was thinking of taking a small drill bit, place it at the end of the
tear
and drill a small hole ever so slightly deeper than the tear.  This would
relieve the tearing pressure.  Then place some masking tape around the
area
leaving the small hole and tear exposed.  Then, place a small amount of
silicone over the tear and whole and remove the tape.

Any other ideas?

Bob

I have the same problem with my 1993 Coleman Rio.  It is compounded by the
fact that the two outside clasps on the lid have broken, and now the center
clasp is breaking also from stress.  I tried to find a replacement deck lid,
but a search was fruitless.  I ended up using White Duct Tape to "Tastefully
cover and support the broken areas.

Gorgo:

Did you repair the cracking plastic?  Mine seem to be cracking one at the
front corner at ground level and the other in the corner at the top.

I have some silicone glue from GE that works damn good.  I've going to
seal
it with a flat bead in a few days.

Yes, I repaired the cracks with superglue.  The glue essentially "Welded"
the plastic together.  Good results using the white tape.  It looks good
cosmetically, and you have to look close to see the tape.
If you know where I can get a replacement storage compartment lid, let me
know.  I am looking for one

I have seen this done for small cracks in little aircraft windshields,
which are made from Plexiglass.  Seems to work fine.  The crack is
stopped from getting any bigger as it can't get past the smooth hole the
drill made.

Sounds like you've got nothing to lose.  You might drop by an airport,
see if you can find a friendly mechanic to give you tips on exactly how
to do it.

Look in the phone book for a body shop explain your problem they can fix it
right or they can tell you where to get it done. Cost about $75 to $100 but
it won't happen again.

Find a place that does plastic welding and ask if they can repair it for
you.  I had a problem like that on a plastic water tank I had and they were
also able to build the area up to make it stronger.
