Wonder if someone can give me a hint...
My propane detector seems to be starting for no apparent reason.
I am trying to figure out what can be the source...
My Propane tanks are shut.
It seems to be starting only when there is someone in the TT. Last
night, it started at 23h40... what a wake up call!!!! Everyone was
sleeping at this time. This week end, it happened about 5 times.
The only difference I can see vs the last 3 years using this TT is that
we now have a dog... But this can't be the reason (or I hope not!!!) I
taught it might be the dog food that produced some kind of odor... but
it's been removed from the TT... and the LP still starts.
I've looked for any source of other products such as spray can's, alcool
based product... but nothing is close from the detector.
I am at the point where I am going to put a On-Off switch on the
detector... but this is not (really not) the best solution.
Can these be cleaned???
any hint would be appreciated!
thanks

I've heard of this being a problem with dogs before. I have not
experienced it myself (we sometimes camp with our dog), but I have
heard of problems, especially when the dog, um, "outgasses" near the
detector.
In one story I heard, the dog learned on it's own to never sleep near
the propane detector.

Hmmm. Perhaps put a pilot light near the dog outgassing port?
Turns out that in New Zealand, the major cause of pollution is sheep
outgassing (actually burping in this case) - mostly methane, a much more
potent global warming danger than carbon dioxide.
One of the dog (and human) gas products is also methane, although the stinky
part is usually sulfur dioxide.
Propane is C3H8, whereas Methane, the simplest organic gas, is CH4. (Ethane
has w Carbon atoms, Butane has 4, etc.). All of these are volatile
hydrocarbon gasses, which will be detected at some level by propane
detectors. Therefore any source of volatile hydrocarbons will be detected -
including some aerosol can sprays, nail polish remover, fresh oil paints,
paint stripper, etc.
Before shooting (oops...shooing) the dog, perhaps the detector needs to be
cleaned or replaced.

OOps. Ethane has '2' carbon atoms, not 'w'!!

OUrs in the MH goes off quite frequently, I was told that it has to do with
the heat and the fumes being produced from the plastic flooring and carpet
glues. Dealer told me this.
Food for thought

always thought this was odd myself, but our 120 lb Newfoundland dog likes to
sleep under the table where it is cool, this is where the LP detector is
also located, a number of times she has hit the test button with her paw
diring the night, to awaken us all with the eary screech, didn't believe it
until I saw it happen once......so now I know, could be the same situation
happening to you?
Good luck

No, there is no Test button on mine, just a mute button that I have to
hit when the detector starts...
Yesterday, I tried putting the dog by to the detector for a few minutes
(what a silly test!!!even the dog was looking at me while I was petting
it) and nothing happened... I also removed a few inline skates and
running shoes that were under the table. Installed my on-off switch
inside a cabinet (I figured it would be usefull anyway to turn off the
detector when the TT is not in use and don't want to drain the battery)
... now that all of this is done, it has not started beeping since!!!
story to be continued I guess...

The detector started only once this week end (4 day trip) and it happens
that the dog was sitting just beside the detector. It probably
outgassed, but fortunately for us... it's not smelling!! ;-)
Turn off my detector with the switch for 30min. and clicked it back on
after, and all was OK.
So... I can now blame it on the dog I guess!

Poor dog is going to get a complex! Quietly sleeping, passes gas, LOUD
BLARING NOISES! The dog may end up retaining gas, and explode!

Is this a continuous squeal, or a periodic beeping sound? If it is
the latter, that is generally an indication of low battery voltage.

it's the continuous squeal... with the alert light at on.
