How can I make our beds more comfortable, better padded. The Wal-mart egg
crates aren't thick enough. Thank you.

Enhance (add to) or replace.  Pretty simple.

By themselves or ADDED TO the camper's existing mattress?

Low/bottom-end popup camping trailers (many?) come with a three-inch thick
foam mattress.

High/top-end popups (are there any?<g>) come with a FOUR-inch thick mattress.
Our 1987 Starcraft came with a 4-inch thick foam mattress.  I believe my
friend's Taos has a three-inch piece of foam.

I never had any trouble sleeping on the 4-inch-thick mattress during the 13
years we had it.  I suspect that 3-incher might have been a little THIN.

Anything you do to help in this area MUST be done with strict attention paid
to its effect on CLOSING the camper with the thicker mattress.  If the gasket
between the top and bottom of the camper doesn't seal, REALLY big trouble can
<ahem> LEAK in.

I believe that you can purchase an appropriately-cut size of NEW foam at most
fabric stores, assuming you wish to try REPLACING what you have with something
new and perhaps even an inch thicker.

Good luck!

If I'm/we're the one(s) you're talking about Jim, yes, the Taos indeed
has 3" "mattresses".  We have purchased self inflating sleeping pads
from Cabela's - granted Angela bought them to sleep better on the
planned white-water/camping trip to Alaska.  They *do* a wonderful job
of adding  padding and insulation to the camper though.  We just roll
them up like a sleeping bag, then, when we set up, roll them out and let
them inflate themselves.

I've been seeing "memory foam" mattress toppers in stores lately.
Kinda expensive but much cheaper than an entire "Swedish Foam"
mattress.

Cautions on making sure the camper will still close & seal properly
still apply...

I use one in my 2005 Fleetwood Niagara and it has to be removed
and stored on the floor in order to get the top to go down. Sure makes
sleeping a lot more comfortable. I just got back for a 5 day camping
trip and having a good bed to sleep in made the trip a lot of fun.
I can't imagine sleeping for 5 nights in a row on the way too firm
mattress that is standard.

Do you have a preference for thickness? I found the memory Foam website,
sounds like good stuff, I'm thinkin' a 2" depth?

I bought one that is 3 inches thick. I got it at a store called
Bed, Bath and Beyond.

An inexpensive futon mattress works great.

We had the same problem and found out our Futon mattress is the exact same
size! We put it on top of the existing cheapy mattress and it fit perfectly
AND closed with no problems at all. Talk about comfortable! You can usually
pick the futon mattresses up really cheap at low-end furniture stores. Just
measure length, width AND height to make sure.
