Just in case anyone out there is building a utility trailer from
scratch like I am, I have the State of Colorado requirements that your
trailer must adhere to. This is per the Colorado State Patrol
Headquarters (303-239-4500) on July 20th, 2005.
Max Width = 102"
Max Length Single Vehicle = 45ft
Max Length Combo Vehicle (ie car with trailer) = 70ft
Max Height = 13ft
Max Weight of Single Axle Vehicle = 22,000 lbs
Braking System = not required if trailer weight is less than 3,000 lbs
Trailers built after 1958 must have:
- Brake Lights - As widely spaced as practical
- Mounted not less than 20" off the ground
- Mounted not more than 72" off the ground
- White light to illuminate license plate
- Turn signals
I specifically asked about saftety chains. They are not required.
(However, the are obviously a good idea).
Happy building and happy trailering!

I expect the 22,000-lbs is CORRECT. That would make sense given the multiple
axles of over-the-road tractor/trailer rigs.
The single axle of my 1987 Starcraft popup supported well over 2,200-lbs.

It's hard to imagine wanting to put 11 TONS(!) on a single axle for
something that a car or a pick-up will tow! That must be one heavy lawn
mower...
IIRC 22,000lbs is the max capacity for a single axle on a semi-tractor or
trailer per federal regs, but it is required to have air brakes and also
must have either the large dual wheels or extra large single wheels with a
rim diameter of no less than 20" in diameter and no fewer than 10 lugs.
Again, that's only according to my (occasionally faulty) memory...
