Coming West yesterday afternoon on the PA Turnpike (no camper, just us this
trip), before the first tunnel (actually, just after the last tunnel going
East), on the Eastbound side, was a small pick-up with a TT in tow that had
an unexpected encounter with the guard rail. The pick-up was now facing
West, still hooked up to the TT which was still facing East, but alongside
of it, with a lot of damage to the pick-up on the passenger side (which
would have hit the guard rail). Several other people with motorhomes had
stopped to help, and the State police were already there. No obvious
injuries I could see. Driving by too fast to assess the damage to the TT
Conditions were: dry pavement, daylight, no significant wind, no other
cars/trucks involved that I could see. My guess is that they were going too
fast out of the tunnel and could not navigate the downslope plus left hand
curve, and lost control into the guard rail, then jackknifed. They were
lucky they didn't 'evil kneivel' it into the canyon beyond.
Lots of TT's seen on the trip (Ohio to Cape Cod & back), but just a few
pop-ups. Most of the TT's were going too fast for what they were towing (as
in over 70 mph).

Who ever heard of speed being a factor in safety?

it sure is in my opinion... I hate doing 80 and coming up behind some lugnut
doing 50 in the fast lane.. speed, or lack of it kills... *g*
