Well after spending most of my 43 years in a Popup decided to take the
plunge and bought a 2006 Rockwood Roo 233 Hybrid last week. The family is
ready for bigger digs the kids were tired of having to sleep together and
old dad was getting tired of the time involved in setting up and tearing
down.  Yea it will take some getting used to having a bathroom steps away
from bed on the first trip out I will probably by habit head to the
bathhouse and turn and say dummy you have a bath in your camper now.  Plus
many other amenities such as heated mattresses, microwave a full size fridge
and freezer.  I mostly lurked in this ng but have come to learn alot and
plan to use it to my advantage for years to come.  I also will keep my
subscription to PopUp Times as it is a fun and informative magazine.  Taking
unit out on maiden voyage sept 9-11 to work out the bugs and get used to
some diferent elements that I have never had such as a hot water heater and
indoor plumbing.

So now its off to write a for sale add for the dear old popup.  I know I
will miss her but she gave us years of enjoyment and I know she will give a
new owner the same.

Does the side bed cause you concerns about being not able to extend it in
some places? I've been in campsites where I could barely fit the trailer in
and still open the awning, much less open a slide-out/tip-out on the
trailer.

I did think about it but most of the campgrounds we use on a regular basis
have plenty of space all around in fact the campground we are going to in a
couple of weeks  will fit average of 47 feet with alot of space on either
side.  I sometimes wondered how we would get our popup backed into some
places.  Its just one of those things one hs to consider when picking a
campground.

Well...if you don't mind the walk to the bath house, that sure beats having
to dump that nasty stuff at the dump station.  I don't mind as much when I
only have grey water to drain...  We don't normally use our camper's
bathroom.  Though almost as much because I can't hardly fit in the tiny
thing as any other reason...

Growing up, my parents went from a 1974 or so 14' Tag-A-Long travel trailer
(tiny thing) to a 1968 Starcraft pop-up, to their current 1971 18' Terry.
The 18' has all the goodies the little 14' didn't - gas/electric fridge, hot
water heater, water tanks, etc, etc.  The pop-up was nice and roomy, but the
18' travel trailer with all the features is definitely the way to go.
However, with the way gas prices are, that pop-up does have one big
advantage!  :-)

When I got married a few years ago, we started out with a tent, then went
straight to our 18' travel trailer as soon as we could afford it.  The other
thing my parents did was kick us out of the camper as soon as we were old
enough to stay by ourselves out in a tent.  It was nice to have that
freedom, and they didn't have to have as much room inside for us...  I got
to experience most every version of camping that way...

Hi Dave,
We also moved up from a pop-up to hybrid (2004 Travelstar 19sb)  The hybrids
are the best of both worlds.  With all the amenities of a travel trailer but
still the canvas and screen beds so yo're not so confined and still feel
like you're actually camping--not just sleeping inside.  We have camped
about 12 weekends since spring and the benefits of a hybrid are amazing!  We
camped at the Outer Banks with temperatures of 108 and loved the air
conditioner--(we didn't have one in our pop-up)  We've camped in the Smokies
in winter and loved the furnace--(we didn't have that before either)  And as
we get older, we appreciated the bathroom being so close more and more.  I
just can't say enough about how much we enjoy the space and convenience!
This weekend we're camping with 7 of our grandkids (ages 3 to 10) and our 3
dogs!  with our side bunk, dinette and sleeper sofa we have plenty of room,
but probably not much sanity!
Please let me know if I can answe any questions about your new way of
camping---------you're gonna love it!
Also you may want to check in on the Hybrid RV news group.

Congratulations, Dave... and welcome to the dark side...

The Roo is a very popular rig and should serve you well.. If you have questions
that can't be answered here, (a very slight chance), try the hybrid section of
RVnet.. it's free..

   Mac,

Thanks for the web sites I have been looking for sites with "real"
information from real users of this type of camper.

Dave;

Congratulations.  I too went from a Flagstaff popup to a ROO 21SS.
Took delivery a few weeks ago and have been out in it twice.  You will
love the convenience of all the amenities like AC and a full bath.
Have not used my shower yet, maybe next time.

My reason for the upgrade, we have two shelties which made for a tight
squeeze, add some grandchildren and you get the picture.  Our first
trip was with the daughter, son-in-law and two girls 4 and 2.  Lot's of
space with the super slide.

Have you had any problems with your ROO?  So far I found three minor
ones, not even worth going to a dealer for warranty work.  The one that
bothered me most is the fresh water tank was set in place in such a way
the drain valve is about 1 1/2 inches away from the line to the outside
and they never attempted to connect them.   Other problems include hot
water heater going out twice, I think the pilot light is a little weak
and the other problem was a bent jack stand (since corrected)

Good luck with your ROO and perhaps we can meet if you ever come out to
Colorado.

Jerry,

I havent taken delivery of the unit yet sept 1 is the date and taking it out
on the 9th.  I gave it the once over twice and found only 2 concerns that I
brought to the dealers attention.  Part of the surround in the shower about
6 inches is pulling away from the wall it looks like they didnt get enough
glue in that spot and some bubbling in the fiberglass to the left of the
door on the outside  above the logo they have to fix.  I will be checking
there work I tell ya.  So far they havent gotten upset with me since I call
everday with a question or concern I feel when you lay out that kind of
money they should expect it.

Are there any specific questions I should ask the dealer during the walk
through did yours come with a power cord adapter I didnt see one but I didnt
look in the nice carry bag where the power cord is stored.

Thanks  for the help.

Dave... your rig will probably come with a "starter kit" with a 30/20 amp
adapter, sewer hose and fittings, water hose, water pressure regulator, (MUST
HAVE), etc..

If it doesn't, ask the dealer to supply one... I was told that they get them for
little or nothing, since the kit introduces you to the manufactures products..

I will warn you that the forum gets addicting....
I'm subscribed to general RV, travel trailers, towing, and a few others, and
check them a lot... great folks there and a lot of "been there, done that" as
there is in this NG..

Mac,

Yes they are I was on until after midnite last nite and even put my first
post on and received 8 replies in that time Im addicted .  But I feel there
is no better advice than coming from people that actually use the unit and
have experience with them.

Thanks for directing me to the forums.

Congrats!.  We had a hybrid for 2 ½ years.  Loved it!  The only complaint we
had was if you put it away wet (canvas) you have to open it up when you get
home and let it dry out before closing it up.  That's not much of a problem
but we were going every other weekend or so and the wife started complaining
about setting up the bunk end everytime.  LOL  And she wanted to strictly
TENT camp prior to getting the hybrid.  :-)

We have a Class C  now and really enjoy it.  The kids/wife love it because
they can watch TV, play video games, sleep and even use the bathroom.  No we
don't allow them to "run around" but they are free to move about as NEEDED.

Congrats again and Happy Camping!!!
