Where is the best place to look for camping areas in Texas. Our family like
to camp at the state parks (Brazos Bend, Huntsville, Lake Texana, Rusk,
etc), but they can be hard to get into. A lot of the RV "campgrounds" are
just parking lots where the RVs are pushed together and there is not a lot
for kids to see and do.
Is there a good listing of places to camp for tents and Pop Up Trailers?

It's getting harder and harder to just wing it and head out to a TX
state park. Gotta get those reservations, brother.
You looking to fish? swim? kayak? hike? bike? rock-hound? It depends
on what you are looking for, as to where to head. I'm on a lifetime
quest to camp in every state park in TX that has camping (only about
1/3 of the way there). My general advice is to head west. The Hill
Country parks are very nice... favorites are Garner, S. Llano,
Pedernales. Try Bastrop and Buescher for nice little lakes. Lake
Somerville has nice fishing. Palmetto is a neat little ecosystem on
the Guadalupe river. If you go REAL far west, my favorites are
Balmorhea for the swimming and Davis Mtns for the camping and hiking.
Of course Big Bend and Guadalupe Mtns are worth the long drive as well.
Don't forget the county and river authority parks. LCRA has some nice
ones around the Highland Lakes. In your zone, going coastal is always
fun with the pop-up on the beach. The Louisana parks are ("were"?)
pretty nice, too.
Main thing; get out there and get it popped-up! (Hmmm. time for me to
take my own advice)

Speaking as a West Texas popup camper, I have always enjoyed Caprock Canyons
State Park or Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Good for camping, hiking and
biking. A bit far from Lake Jackson though. I also like Balmorhea and
Davis Mountains.
Another favorite is South Llano River State Park in Junction. Hiking and
lots of wildlife. In fact right now the mexican turkeys are there in mass
flocking and breeding. Lots of deer too.
A little closer to you, Stephen F. Austin State Park is nice too. On the
Colorado River, lots of wildlife.
I would suggest Sea Rim State Park, but Sabine Pass got blown away.
Just my 2 cents worth.
