how is this as a tow vehicle? towing a larger popup, 3000 pounds, just
totaled the durango, so in need of a vehicle. towed a lighter popup a few
years back with a jeep grand Cherokee, did a decent job, but i would hope
the commander would tow better.
any feedback would be appreciated.
thanks

The Commander is a smaller, lighter vehicle than the Gran Cherokee.  I
suggest you go to Jeep's site and look at the towing specs for the
vehicle you want.

I received Trailer Life's 2006 Towing Guide just the other day.

The Jeep Commander and Grand Cherokee appear to be virtually identical in tow
ratings across the board.

At their least capable (smallest engine) they both are rated at 3,500-lbs.  At
the other end of the spectrum, they are both rated at 7,200-lbs.

Without further investigation, this causes me to suspect they share the same
platform.  (Sorry Frank)

could be, I didn't go check, but I hope that the original poster would
go check.

That said,  I wouldn't tow anything anywhere near 7200 lbs with a Jeep
anything.  The wheel base is too short and the over hang ratio is too
big.

If he is going to tow 3000 lobs with it, I think he is going to find
it not quite the comfortable tow it could be.

I'll go one better:  I wouldn't tow anything with a Jeep anything.

Agreed.

I'm not a Checy bigot, nor Ford or Dodge, but I wouldn't tow anything
with one either.  If I were going to tow, there are plenty of full
size 1/2 ton pickups with four doors, and 4wd at better prices than
the Jeep.

How did a 3000lb trailer total a Durango?  I towed 2500lbs for years
with a small Nissan truck without problems.

The Commander is built on the same chassis as the Grand Cherokee.  I'm
not sure why they created the Commander.  Seems to not fill any gap in
the market.

For me I bought a 2004 Durango Hemi.  Far better than the older
Durangos.  It's a totally new design.  I moved up to a 5,000lb Hybrid
trailer and this Durango is one of the best tow vehicles I've owned.  I
also have a full sized Dodge truck which tows the same trailer fine but
not as nice of a ride as the Durango.

What hybrid are you towing? We just bought a 2005 Durango Hemi as a
replacement for our P.O.S. '99 Astro. We're currently towing a '00 Coleman
Mesa and plan to replace it with a Hybrid or lightweight TT in the future,
but not immediately. Need ideas on what's good, what's not.

Requirements are a bathroom, preferably separate shower. Would like an
outside stove like Coleman but haven't seen many on hybrids. Am concerned
with water intrusion into bunk ends during takedown. (Somehow, I've escaped
closing the pop-up in the rain.) I like the sense of openness provided by
fold-out bunk ends compared to a solid-wall trailer, but that assumes the
windows are always closed for AC. (We live in FL and camp in the muggy SE.)

2 adults, 2 kids, and Boxer have to fit inside. Prefer not folding down
dinette since it's usually not a decent bed, anyway. Would like a screen
room like our Mesa has. Boxer is totally well behaved and stays within it
without need for further restraint.

TIA

I am towing a 2004 Starcraft Travelstar 21SS0.  It's dry weight is
listed at 3800lbs and loaded mine weighs in close to 5,000lbs.  The Hemi
Durango pulls it with ease.  I'm using an Equalizer brand hitch but
others have said the Reese Dual Cam works well too.

The 21SSO is really nice.  The large slideout makes for quite a bit of
room.  The bathroom/shower is small but more than adequate.  I have not
had to lower the beds in the rain.   Some people have said you just
lower it and pull the tenting over the edges quickly.  At worst only the
outer foot or so of the bottom gets wet and a towel quickly takes care
of it.

The 21SSO has 2 queen beds and a sofa bed thats perfect for kids.  The
dinette does fold down into another bed but I've never ever used it for
such.  I always leave it up.  There are other hybrids with 3 fold out
beds or bunk beds.  I would keep loaded weight under 6,000lbs for the
Durango Hemi.

The Gap that the Commander fills is seating for 7, larger interior space,
and something that the fans of the original Cherokee will move into.  Like
everyone else says, it is built on the same assy line as the Grand Cherokee.
It is a very nice vehicle and it should be able to pull anything you need it
to especially with the Hemi.

To me it makes no sense to have built the Commander on the Grand
Cherokee chassis.  It's interior space is not much more.  It's 109"
wheelbase and 62" track is much too low for decent towing despite the
Hemi.  DC Should have built it on the new Durango chassis with it's 119"
wheelbase and 64" track.  The Commander is pretty much a Grand Cherokee
with 7 seats crammed in.

Just MHO, but if you're going to try towing a 3,000 trailer, (and the 1,000 to
1,500# of cargo/people), you're going to be safer in a pickup or large SUV...
and happier in the long run..

When I tow, I want long wheel base and some weight for the TV... if I don't out
weigh the trailer, the tail is gonna wag the dog.. YMWV
