Coleman Tent Material

Hi Folks,

I have a 1993 Coleman Pioneer Series.  The tent enclosure is made of 2
materials - the colored strip around the bottom seems to be made of
Sunbrella.  The tops of the wings are made of some kind of vinyl like
material.  But the rest of the sides are made of a softer, quilted material.
I like it because it absorbs moisture.

Does anyone know what this quilted material is?

The reason I ask is that I am considering replacing the entire tent
enclosure.  I have looked at www.bearcreekcanvas.com and
www.idahocanvas.com.

Also, can anyone recommend a manufacturer of replacement tents - either one
mentioned above or another company?  My tent enclosure is not in terrible
shape, but it does leak in a few spots in heavy rain.  I am debating whether
to patch the existing tent - and fix the few small spots where it has ripped
at the seams or the velcro has deteriorated.  The rubber mounting strips
that are sewn into the tent are also ripped in a few places and are getting
stiff from age.

Does it seem worth it to try to repair a tent enclosure with the above
problems - or should I just save my piggy bank for a whole new enclosure.
It looks like I would pay between $775 and  $1025 for a replacement.

Any advice or input is greatly appreciated.

I've never had to do that, but a friend of mine has an old Coleman
pop-up that had old, worn and leaky canvas, and it was contributing to
damage to the inside of the roof as well.  He replaced the canvas a few
years ago which, as I recall, cost him about $800.  Fixed the roof
damage at the same time.  Camper is not quite "like new" but he uses it
again without fear, and it probably bought him another 10+ years of
useful life.

Sounds to me like you probably enjoy your Coleman well enough to keep it
rather than replace it, but that patching and trying to repair it is
just putting off the inevitable.  My guess is that it won't get any
cheaper to replace the canvas the longer you wait.

Yea - my roof is damaged too.  The last owner mounted brackets on the roof
to hold a small boat.  Eventually, the seals were compromised and now half
the ceiling is wavy from water damage.  I have to fix that too.  I've been
browsing this group's archives about that project.  At least the roof is not
warped.

Yea - that's how I'm trying to rationalize the expense too.  I just spent a
year decking out our boat.  I guess it's time for some cash and TLC for the
camper.

Hey, I just met a homebrewing banjo player - when my family & I were camping
in the popup for the last 2 weekends - at the Hogtowne Medeival fair in
gainesville, FL.  I play a liitle banjo myself. :)
