Greetings,

My wife and I are looking at purchasing a 2003 Coleman Niagra Elite pop-up
camper from the parents of our friends.  It has only been used exactly 5
times and is still in great condition with all the options.

We will be upgrading from our current 1998 Coleman Sea Pine because we want
more room and our own bathroom.

Any comments good or bad concerning this new(er) camper would be
appreciated, especially from anyone who currently owns the same or similar
unit and can speak first-hand on any issues it might have that we should be
aware of.

Cheers - Jonathan

did the 2003 Elite came with ABS roof?.... this would probably be the
only issue.

Greetings,

The 2003's do not come with the ABS roof.  Our '98 Sea Pine did, however,
and we had to have it replaced under warranty so I am very familiar with
that issue.

I am wondering if the exterior lid to the front cargo trunk is going to be
an issue.  I have seen here over the years people complaining about the lid,
the hinges, the seal, etc. at one time or another but am hoping that Coleman
has addressed all of those problems.

NO, the 2003 do come with the ABS roof. The 2003.5 models have the
Alumatite roof(has the tracks for roof racks).

Greetings,

Perhaps I should have been a little more clear - The 2003 camper we are
looking at does not have an ABS roof.  It has the Alumalite roof with the
tracks on top.  Our 1998 Sea Pine had the ABS roof that we had replaced
under warranty so I know the difference and would not want to go through
that again, especially since we won't be the original owners of the Niagra.

Better?

Do the 2003.5's have the "flip-flopped" floor plan (i.e. the door is in
front of the axle)?

The older design (with the door behind the axle) could get more than a bit
interesting to tow.  Sway control on those is mandatory, and some dealers
wouldn't let you out of the lot without either a swaybar or signing a waiver
of liability for the dealer.

The 2003-2003.5 still has the front storage box that can potentially
leak and cause the floor wood to swell.

Preventiing leaks is relatively easy if the lid plastic has not
cracked, (another potential source of leaks).  Just keep all latches
engaged AND locked, especially the side access door.

And, as has been mentioned, use a sway control device.

I used to own a 2003 Sun Valley.  Except for the noted sway situation noted
above it was fantastic.  The Sun Valley had interior storage where you are
looking at the exterior storage so I cannot comment on that.  The roof is
incredibly sturdy and damage resistant (better than the roof on our current
Redwood).  The easy on back braces are great and easy to use - nothing bad
about it except the furnace thermostat is funky as all get out.
