Showing my ignorance here... beside wearing repellent and clothing
that covers, are there ways to discourage ticks from living in my
backyard?  Where I have lawn there is not a problem.  Further back
we're clearing thorn bushes, blackberry vines, brush and that's where
they are hitching rides.

We have squirrels and rabbits trooping through that part of the yard.

What eats ticks?

Thanks for any info.

Living down south bugs are always a issue fleas and ticks are both a
pain in my... well you get the idea... my dog isn't happy either...
Every April I spray the yard with a pesticide to kill the fleas and
ticks I have to do this about once every couple months down here... up
in Ohio it was a twice a year process but here I need to keep up with
them... I've used granualized killers and they also seem to work well if
watered into the lawn. The trick is to keep on top of it and we have
been lucky only one tick has hit the dog in 5 years....

We have found that Frontline works well for dogs and cats.  You are lucky
you have back yard small enough to spray for them.

2 acres is small... but it can be done... just need a big enough sprayer
... or like me a spray where the dog goes and granular for the rest....

Rumor has it that Guinea Hens eat ticks?
At our home and garden shops up here in wisconsin they have tick (and
other insects) killing powders and sprays to apply to your lawns. My
sisterinlaw down in Ky used to use a powder in the yard to keep them
under control there. Dogs always ran in the boonies and fields and came
home loaded all the time (several times a day tick check).

Google on guinea hen or guinea fowl.  They are ground feeders and eat
seeds and ticks.  They also make excellent watch dogs.  They will raise
quite a ruckus if any thing strange comes into the area.
