jd - 05 Jun 2006 02:44 GMT LOOKING FOR A POP UP THAT WOULD BE CHEAP ENOUGH FOR WIFE AND I TO GET OUT ONCE IN A WHILE
Shopdog - 05 Jun 2006 03:14 GMT Well, I guess my first question to you would be , Where are you located? How are we going to know if we could sell you a pop Up?
I have one for sale good condition, NOT the best, but still functions great. 500.00 1981 Coleman Colonial

Kegger - 05 Jun 2006 03:21 GMT I'm glad you asked where he was located but wouldn't it have expedited the matter if you had also told him where you were located.....
Don't discount the dealers if you let one know you are looking they do run into deals at times that they aren't interested in and may be able to steer your way. I bought my last two that way both needed some repairs but they were inexpensive and resold for much much more then I had in them. The other idea is rentals. If your not sure you would like camping or want to invest right off the bat rent a unit and see how it goes.

Am on the exwife protection program, can't have her figuring out where I am.

Look for pop up with substaintial dirt or grass growth, you know the ones people use for lawn ornaments, Chances are they have been put out to pasture cause the "novelty" had worn off. Try these people, Thats how I got mine, it was just sitting in someones back yard looking like a storage table and having the grass high around it. I asked about it and they said the sort of forgot about it. I took it off thier hands for a few bucks, did some minor repairs and shes as good as the day she was new. well sort of. She works great.

Shopdog - 05 Jun 2006 21:01 GMT I have a 1981 Coleman Colonial. Sink/stove and electric panel. Slide out bunks and canvas Thats all, nothing fancy but it gives me the tenting without the rocks in my back (LOL). My wifes likes it cause there is not much to putting it up and you don't have that damp feeling in your bag all the time.
I raised or lower the axle depending on how you look at it, I made the trailer ride higher so we could tow it in to the areas we like to camp. Plus, its now level with the truck. I refinished the kitchen area as the particle board had absorbed more water over the years then it should have. I re plumbed the tank and sandblasted the frame and repainted it. New wheel bearings and tires. Oh, I repainted the whole thing white top with gunmetal gray bottom. The old stickers had faded away and the paint was aged looking.

Kegger - 05 Jun 2006 23:39 GMT Searcher, I know how you feel. About 10 years ago I bought my first Popup again a used one and rebuilt it. Was so much fun I've been rebuilding them ever since. I spent a night camping in the tent and had even bought a airmatress to take the ouch out of the rocks. Well the cold got to me even through the mattress and I ended up with Pneumonia after a couple weeks.... decided right then and there that we weren't going to sleep on the ground again. Next move due to health issues will be to a hard side hybrid... I average 3 to 4 rebuilds per year and always have one I'm taking camping that's finished. My 1983 Coleman Williamsburg is by far my favorite camper so far roomie and has all the ammenities. Now anyone have a older hybrid they want to sell? I'm in central NC.

Its closed up and this week is tight for time, but I may be able to open it and send you pics next week. I will try this week but can't guarantee it. Unless of course your real serious and what to take the drive, then I'll go out right now and take pics. LOL

I laugh thats > not camping thats driving your house around looking at sights. Yep, there are a lot of people like that out there. We just got back from a week at St. Andrews Recreation area outside of PCB. There was a high end motor home there that had a mat in front of the door. That and the curtains pulled were the only signs of life...
Shopdog - 06 Jun 2006 21:27 GMT WHo cares, its called conversation evolution. Its still about camping anyway

The fifth day, as we were slowly and reluctantly beginning to break down, a "land yacht" pulled in. The guy got out, leveled it, and set up his satellite dish. They were not seen again by mid-afternoon when we finally left. Made us wonder why they had bothered to come.

I always marvel at the LOCATION of the RV campgrounds I view when driving down the interstate. Even for a one-nighter, I wouldn't stay there unless I wanted to run the roof air (fan, at least) for its "white noise". Otherwise, I wouldn't get a good night's sleep due to the traffic noise penetrating my camper. (My next rig will have DUAL PANE windows.)
I have no problem driving 5-10 miles OFF the interstate to find a QUIET place to spend the night. This would, of course, put me in the vicinity of <ahem> REAL campers. Having no intention of staying for more than a night or two, I wouldn't be inclined to "plant the north 40" and "homestead". With a good shot at the satellite, after a LONG day's drive, I would be inclined to kick back and veg in front of the tube. I'll marvel at the flora and fauna tomorrow.

The nearest Interstate was over the top of the mountain, two plus hours away. The nearest highway that actually went anywhere (other than the one he/they drove in on) was a 45 minute drive down the mountain through a series of switchbacks and with 12% plus grades.
There was only a small view of anything but straight up (He had to put the dish on a stand quite aways from the camper), as it was pretty heavily forested by lodgepole pines.
If he was a full timer, he definitely got off the beaten track, I will give him that.

Somehow, given this was a campground off the beaten path, had a rather rugged road to drive to get to, had a hand pump as the one and only source of water, I would question that. Could be, but...?
