Well here goes, I'm new to the newsgroup, it's my first post and ...I just
purchased my first tent trailer.
It's a 1991 Jayco J-Series 1006. It's in great shape, compared to the 20 or
so other units I looked at in the same price range. I thought I'd never find
a used one, that the wife would approve of. Actually she didn't have a
choice, I bought it with my 10 year old son on the way home from a hockey
tournament.
We, (wife and 3 boys aged 6, 8 and 10) just had our first weekend away.
Although not quite prepared.....the weather forecast was in our favour, my
son had a hockey tournament near a beach community and I figured we had to
get started sooner or later.
Well I'm glad we did. The weather co-operated, highs of 30C, 30 minutes of
rain on Friday evening and not a drop of water in the trailer...what more
can you ask for.
My only question to the experienced out their....how do I assemble an
awning...without the help of 5 people. I didn't have much time to try it
before the trip, so needless to say we didn't bother using it.
I'm looking forward to more trips with the family!

Remember to unroll it when the trailer is about 1/2 way cranked up. Put in
the stretcher poles and secure the ropes and ties with slack in the line.
When the trailer is fully cranked up, extend the vertical awning poles to
full height and adjust everything.
When closing, reverse the process. It's easier to stow if the top is not
all the way down. Should you ever have need to have it repaired, have a
Velcro strap installed in the center. That holds it rolled up while you're
trying to zip the bag shut.
Setting it up by yourself is easier than stowing it by yourself.

Good advice from Chris here. It takes some practice to be able to set up
the awning alone. The part about unrolling it when it is 2/3 cranked up is
key (I do it at about eye level). One thing I will add is that before I can
get the stretcher poles (those that go from the trailer roof to the awning
cross-piece) and loose guide lines in place I have to let go of one side to
work on the other side. At this point I set the vertical poles on an angle,
their bottoms sitting near to the camper, so that the awning is kind of set
up and the angle keeps it unrolled and off the ground for the short bit of
time needed to fuss with the other stuff.

I've had success by installing the middle pole first, then the whole
awning is sort of semi-balanced and self standing (as long as there is
not too much wind). Then put up the end poles.
