I picked it up last night set it up and camped then spent today cleaning it
the way we like it. This will be our first camper 2 adults, 2 kids. Its a
1996 starcraft starflyer, looks good and came with everything, extra hook up
hose and a few 30 amp cords, pot, pans, dishes, forks, heater, microwave,
small fridge, toater, minioven and even a george forman grill and more. It
also has the in/out stove, heat, sink, curtains.

Just about all thats needed, its in good shape needed a good cleaning the
priv\ce was $1600 so I hope I did good.

The canvas looks new and is some sort of vinyl coated canvas??? seems
durable, the seller thought it was replace a few years ago but it has a
starcraft tag.

Any input would be great.

Stay away from campgrounds that may be visited by bears.  I know a family
whose pop-up was torn to near shreds by a bear after they left for the
morning.  I had to have smelled food or something it wanted.  Had the bear
came a bit earlier there could have been a real tragedy.  Make sure you camp
in a safe bear-free area.

That sounds terrible. However, I prefer campgrounds that are in the
vicinity of bears. The only place bears aren't found here (most other
places too?) is near cities and who wants to camp there?

I was hoping more for tips on the camper.

Where are you intending to use it?  Big difference in suggestions if you
are going to be by an ocean, in high mountains, or out on the plains.

Yeah, congratulations on your new camper but be prepared to have it destroyed
by a bear.  Sheesh!   :(

Your best bet is to "camp" in your driveway a night or two, then take the
camper to a nearby place for some more "shakedown" camping.

Take a note pad along and make a list of wants and needs.

This will allow you to discover what works and what doesn't without the hassle
of being a "million" miles from home and at the mercy of higher-priced stores.

Don't worry - AT ALL - about bears.  If you stay only in "official"
campgrounds, the operators will simply not let you stay in a popup (or tent)
if there is concern for bears.

It sounds like you got a pretty good deal on a nice popup camper.  With some
care, planning and experience, you should have fun for a long time.
Congratulations!

I live in Connecticut so bears aren't to big of a concern. I am more
concerned of the late day thunderstorms. We did camp in the back yard and
the kids loved it, the pad of paper is a great idea.

Take a pad of paper and a camping supplies catalog.  When you're
sitting around in
your camper and just relaxing, browse the catalog.  You might find just
The Thing
that would make your trip easier.

Congratulations on the popup, Wayne.  I got a 'Cannot find server' message
when I went to look at the picture(s), but from the other posts it appears
that you did well.  I am on my second used popup (first one got rear-ended),
so I applaud your choice of going used.

The advice on going locally and using the notebook is all good stuff.  I
might also suggest that you go to a place where there are plenty of other
campers camping in popups so you can get all your questions answered in many
ways by many folks who are just brimming to show off their stuff to you if
you ask.  I see that you are in Conn (NJ here), so one of these places might
very well be the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival (no personal connection here
other than being a regular attendee) that is coming up the weekend after
next in Hillside NY, where NY, Conn & Mass all meet up.  Lots and lots of
campers all over the place in a fun family setting.  Google it to find out
more if you wish.  If you decide to go, reply here and I can maybe arrange
to meet you there if you would like.

Watch out for the bears!  <grin....>  Seriously this is not something I have
ever worried about while camping in NY, PA, VT and NH....  We do tend to
keep the food in the car though.

One suggestion would be, if you are camping out in the sun, to have along a
giant tarp that you can sling over the whole rig and stake down.  We do this
and it keeps the camper much cooler in the hot sunny days.  You want to have
an air gap between the top of the camper and the tarp so air flows through
(we shove boxes up there).

As for thunderstorms, this is why you have a popup instead of a tent.  If
you set your feet down stably, you should be OK; these things hold up pretty
well in storms.

Enjoy it,
Tomes
