Hard starting Snapper Mower

jdagy - 11 Nov 2006 22:29 GMT I have a + 15y/o Snapper mower, Briggs engine, It difficult to start recently, I replaced the plug, and air filter. The mower will start with the Air filter removed. I let it run a wile and reassemble the filter. I readjusted the carburetor settings according to original specs. Last year (over the winter) I replaced a broken pull cord and may have cut it a bit short. Maybe when trying to start it the engine does not turn enough to suck in enough air. Any suggestions?

Hi, I assume you use the Snapper mower to move your pop up around to keep this on topic :)
It could be a number of things. Gummed up maladjusted carburetor, bad gas, bad gas filter, bad air filter, choke not working, primer not working properly if equipped with one, worn points and or condenser.
Check and replace/clean the filters as necessary. If the carburetor has never been cleaned, rebuilt or replaced I would look to that. Try using carb cleaner on it. Most of these are not designed to run on E85 by the way and that stuff will usually gum them up. Lots of info on Briggs engine on the net if you do a Google search.

jdagy only posted to alt.home.lawn.garden...all of his posts to this group have been on-topic. So why did you repost it in alt.rv.pop-up-trailers?

That's where it showed up and that's what's in it's header. I did not re post it anywhere. I don't cross post and only post answers to the newsgroup I read posts in. I don't frequent any alt.home.lawn.garden news groups either. Maybe he accidently posted it to the wrong news group....I only tried to help the guy out sorry if it bothered you.

Not a big deal, I saw RickA's reply quoting you, and I did not see your message so I had to ask. Google Groups only shows it in alt.home.lawn.garden, so I guess your recall half-worked.
Sometimes a half-working system is worse than a non-working system.

Regardless if it belongs in ARP-U-T or not, I can offer some insight.
I have a Briggs powered McLane reel mower, that barely lasts the summer without needing service. I need to choke it more and more and eventually it just won't run any more. I take it in and they say it needs a "carb kit." That's normal they tell me. Three different shops.
Finally I'm able to discuss with one of the old guys that actually works on the engines and he tells me because of EPA regulations, they have to make the fuel ports so small that they clog up easily. Most modern small engines do not have any adjustments. Once it clogs, you take it apart, clean it out and put in a new needle valve.
And here is the link to make it on topic and relative to ARP-U-T: Many pop-up-ers and RV'ers use generators - which suffer similar maladys. In reading thru many posts about hard starting or non-running generators, I find many recommendations for: "Fuel additive." Gas tends to not be used quickly in small power engines causing gunk build up.
One summer of adding a little Sea Foam to my fuel and the engine is still running smoothly. Another product recommended is "Sta-Bil"
Good luck.

Another product recommended is "Sta-Bil" I will second the recommendation of using Stabil. I use in in the gas of all my small engines where the gas might sit a bit and I never have a gunk-up problem. The gas/oil mix for my chain saw can last a long while before I use up that bit and it just keeps on working well.
 Signature Hope this helps, Tomes

I use sta-bil, and also only buy gasoline (for my lawn equipment) in small quantities. I had a neigbor who would buy 10 gallons of gas and try to use it all summer long, then dump the leftover in his snowblower. He had constant engine problems.
The only problems I had was when I'd hit the top of the boulder in the back yard with the lawn mower. :-(
