I've run across what is claimed to be a 1977 Palomino pop-up that is for sale.
In general how was the quality of Palominos of that vintage?
The owner has been hard to contact and they do not live in the house that has
the trailer in the front yard with the FS sign on it, they're not answering
their phone. Anyway I have only seen the outside of this unit and I have a
question about how the lifting mechanism works.
Here's a picture of the trailer:

I looked all over the trailer and see no where for a crank, is this type
manually lifted?

Thanks.

Sure looks manual and it might have a spring assist, but I am not seeing
that from this picture.  Interesting that they do not even have it closed up
all the way.  That makes me wonder if it does close properly and if water
has seeped into it.  I would also take a good look at the tires for
cracking.

I was wondering about that too. It has been for sale for months in several
periodicals locally and the price has been dropping over time. I think it hasn't
been closed properly because they've been showing it to a lot of lookers and are
tired of tucking it all in and closing it right. It does have problems, one is
that the front latches for the top are not OEM, see picture at this URL:

What I could see of the wood on the front bed area didn't look good, but wood
can be replaced. The tires are okay but they are Carlisle and I don't mind
putting tires on a vehicle. For the asking $600 it might be workable with some
repair. Of course I'll have to see it fully open and then fully closed to know
for sure.

Thanks.

I would not let those latches kill the deal if they work.  On my old popup I
had to move a latch for the front storage box because the screws pulled out.
As long as it works and does not leak I would likely be OK with that.  It is
a 1977 for $600; it is not going to be perfect.  It will boil down to what
is not perfect and how much that matters.  Maybe walk up to the guy with
$300 cash in your hand, waving it around and begin to walk away with it
still waving and see how much trouble he really is moving it off of his
ownership.  I really suspect that he will not be overrun with prospects.  It
could be a cool little camper for cheap.  I have always had a soft spot for
the old and the odd (like my old 64 Corvair van I once had...).

It looks to me that they were using a nut/bolt deal to hold the top down.
It's not a deal breaker for me, not at the price they're asking.
Once the wind here dies down I'll try to get a look at it open.
They also have a 30 some foot Bounder class A that isn't selling for them.

You can get replacement 'normal' clamps too.

The type of clamps doesn't bother me much, it's just an indication that this
camper may have had other than an easy life. When I shopping I look for this
sort of indicator as a guide to the possible history of the unit.

This is the same setup as my old 1969 Skamper. Each side is manually
pushed up,
and locked into place. It's actually easier to raise than the crank-up
models,
because the sets of poles are spring-loaded. However, the down side is
that if both
springs break on one end, you are pushing up the whole weight of that
side. I know,
as this happened to mine. Where I live, I've had the major problem of
not being able
to find anyone who knows how to replace the springs. This is something
to keep in
mind...
