What!  Another "mold / mildew" question!

Hi,

Ok, I've read a bunch of the posts on the dreaded mold / mildew
disease that pop-ups are prone to, but I have a few more questions to
anyone in the know.

For background, when I opened up my camper this spring, I found the
roof over one of the beds loaded with dark spots.  I had a few holes
in both the screening and the canvas, and I also had a serious ant
infestestion too.  I swear that I put the thing away dry and clean,
but now realize that the dampness may be due to a possible roof leak
(haven't seen one, but can't think of any other possible cause...).
There appear to be a few other areas within the camper where there are
spots too.  I store the camper in the yard, on the grass.

Ok, so this year when I put it away, I will:

- clean out the camper thoroughly
- insure the canvas is dry
- place a few ant traps around on the inside (seems like that might
attract them too, but it sounds like others have had success doing
this)
- sprinkle pesticide around the wheels and front tongue to ward off
the little critters
- cover the top part with a tarp, in case there are leaks in the roof

  Now, the questions:

1 - Is the mold "dead" now, that the canvas has been dry for a few
weeks?
2 - If not, then do I need to "treat" any place where I see dark spots
with some bleach solution to insure the mold is dead, or will putting
it away dry keep any existing mold from spreading?
3 - Can I blame the holes in my canvas on the mold / mildew, or the
ants?  I didn't think ants would make holes....
4 - Would shoving my dehumidifier in the pop-up for a few days after I
close it up to hgelp dry it out more be "a little extreme"?

  Thanks in advance....

Probably.  A long-term issue may be ODOR.  Musty, moldy, etc...

Dry is #1.  Clean is a distant second.  "Nuking" a moldy area (active or not)
can't hurt in any case.  Just remember that whatever you use may discolor the
treated area.  Still, no/changed color is better than mildew/mold.

I can't see even out-of-control mold perforating canvas in one closed-up
season.  I can, however, see ants doing the damage.  Yes, they make holes.

It sure wouldn't hurt.  Only your electric utility will know the difference.

I virtually allowed our (bought new) 1987 camper rot-out from under our feet
toward the end of our use of it over thirteen years.  I highly recommend
avoiding that "fun".  Keep it dry/tight.

I response to question 4; I suggest you do what we did with the pop-up when
closing it up for any length of time.  Get a small bucket/pail a
dowel/straight stick and the bottom/foot end of  a ladies stocking or panty
hose and a product like Damp-Rid which absorbs the moisture from the air.
Put 1 to 2 cups of the absorbent into the stocking, tie the stocking as
close as you can to the dowel and lay the contraption across the top of the
pail.  Put this in the camper on the floor under the beds just before you
close the door.  The camper will have a nice fresh smell when you open it up
and it will be nice and dry.  There will be a syrupy fluid in the pail that
doesn't seem to harm vegetation when you discard it.
Q1&2.  The mold is dormant not dead it will grow given the right/humid
conditions.  You can/should treat the spots with a mild bleach solution, but
it is not a one time fix-all  just a delaying action.
Q3. If there was something on the canvas that the ants would like to eat
then they could be the culprits.  I think mold or mildew would leave a
discolored edge around the holes.
