I'm building a small camper-trailer. Somewhat similar to those that you can
buy plans for on ebay. It's small, and mostly plywood.
How do I seal the wood? I see that some people have varnished, painted,
ureathaned . How well does that work?
I priced aluminum, but that doubles the cost of the trailer.
Isn't there some kind of vinyl that I can put over the wood? Something
similar to house siding but flat without the ridges. Would vinyl flooring
work? Too soft or too brittle?
This is a low budget trailer so I guess varnish or urethane or paint will
have to do. But how does it hold up?

In what little wood work I've done, much less of that finished with
polyurethane, my experience has been that polyurethane-finished surfaces are
VERY durable and water-resistant.
I don't know how such treated surfaces stand up to outdoor storage and, worse,
direct exposure to UV. Without the UV, I'd bet polyurethane endures quite
well outdoors. With the UV, all bets are off for me.
I'm a camper, grandpa and phone guy. Your query might be better directed at a
woodworking group. Good luck!

...you need to make sure that any finish you use is 'exterior'
rated...marine varnish....thompsons water seal...after all, it's not going
to be so big that you couldn't recoat it every summer...
john ( vinyl flooring - not good...)

Laminating epoxy would seal it pretty well. Even better would be to
fiberglass the corners and seams. Locate your nearest West Marine products
dealer and let him show you what you need.
If you do go this route don't disregard the safety issues regarding
respirators, ventilation and adequate gloves.
