Warren Moore - 22 Oct 2007 16:37 GMT I've been off here for several months, but notice that there have only been 22 posts in the past month. Is the group dead? Shame if it is, I've been here on and off since its inception.

It is difficult for lower-volume newsgroups to survive after multiple troll attacks and competition from several different web forums. People go where the action is, I guess. :(

tobe - 22 Oct 2007 17:36 GMT Even though we sold our pop-up to my wife's sister & family a month ago, I am still here and intend to stay! I agree that there used to be a LOT of interesting conversation and help here which has slowly faded over the past 2 years. Too bad, as I got lot of good information here...and eventually was able to provide some hopefully helpful advice, too!
Fortunately, the spam messages on the newsgroup have declined a lot as well. I have perhaps 35 spam addresses blocked for this group, and the log shows very little activity from those in a while.

I did manage to get my pop-up stored away in my garage for the winter yesterday. That is always an interesting thing to do as there is only about one inch of clearance on each side. It is a Fleetwood Niagara.

I need to take it down the road for a spin, open it up on a good dry day and let it air out.

Everything was fine, but I did turn on the furnace and let it warm up so I could spend some time in it before closing it and storing it for the winter.
It really seems like winter is approaching when it starts to get cold enough that I know it is time to put it away in my heated garage. I will be many months before it will be time to go camping again.
Jim Redelfs - 23 Oct 2007 13:24 GMT > Is the group dead? Virtually, yes.
It was (is?) hijacked by persistent trolls and a small handful of otherwise "legitimate" participants that couldn't help themselves and continued to feed the trolls.
> Shame Agreed. <sigh> JR
Mark Filice - 27 Nov 2007 00:22 GMT >> Is the group dead? > >Virtually, yes. I visit here from time to time and will post if I can help. I don't own a popup anymore, so I just don't visit here much. Back in 1999, this was a very active newsgroup. I did a Google Groups search a while back and the names all came back to me.
But the spammers took over and helped drive everyone away. There is another group I frequent that has been hijacked by a lone crazy. Not many can resist the temptation to respond to him--so the chocolate/dog poop ratio has gotten too great for it to be of any value to me anymore.
I think a lot of folks go to the RV.net group for popup information. It is moderated, so the spam attacks are quickly removed.
This was a good group back in the day.

When I log onto this group it lists some 96 messages unread...however, they are all messages from spammers I have blocked, and the messages do not show up. Sigh...that leaves about 1 readable message a week on average.
Mark Jones - 27 Nov 2007 04:31 GMT >> This was a good group back in the day. > > Yes, it was. Too bad people don't use their filters to keep the > spammers at bay. What spammers? I gave them the boot the instant it started. Filters are good.

Exactly. another group or two I visit has political raves and many off topic posts...but that is the was it is....the folks have a group topic but use the group as chat room...it works...this group just tends to be more or topic oriented.
What casual readers miss is that when a question is asked, the thread gets quite long...
I kind of like it here...

I plan to keep my pop-up for a long time, so I will be here if someone has a question.
Fred Boer - 28 Nov 2007 01:36 GMT Hello:
I have occasionally visited in the past and pop in now and then. However, my ISP dropped newsgroups, so it isn't as efficient for me as it used to be... and it just isn't the same camping with teenagers as it was when they were little - so our use of the trailer has dropped way off lately.
Towing horror story... towing a Coleman Taos behind my totally overwhelmed Subaru Loyale down a loonng steep hill. Somehow managed to get stopped at the bottom of the hill with no brakes left at all, surrounded by a big white cloud of burning brake pad smoke. Learned a hard lesson about having enough braking for your load! :)

Also Thunderbird, from www.mozilla.com. It's free.

Thunderbird is great but I think the OP is really asking about a news feed rather than a reader program. I don't know of any decent free news servers. Best would be to use Google Groups but it's a pain when you're used to using a program like Thunderbird.
Fred Boer - 30 Nov 2007 01:25 GMT Hi! Do you mean news reader or news server? I use Outlook Express - its free and works well.
As to a free newsreader, I use nntp.aioe.org - but I don't really know much about it - I think I did a google search on "free news servers"...

dmasson@pei.sympatico.ca - 04 Dec 2007 20:37 GMT Your horror story: the importance of having brakes on the trailer. I have a Subaru Legacy and I pull an 1 500 pounds Aliner with brakes. I have done over 10 000 km (6 000 miles) and no problem yet. Well, you're alive to tell the story.
Daniel
> Hello: > [quoted text clipped - 18 lines] >>> >>>> Is the group dead? Fred Boer - 05 Dec 2007 02:17 GMT You are probably right - the Taos has no trailer brakes. After the Loyale, I towed it with a Subaru Legacy Wagon, and never experienced a problem with braking, but I couldn't see much if anything with the car's rear view mirror. Now I tow it with a Sienna, and I have a nice clear view behind me. I liked my little Loyale very much (although it did lose an engine on me!), but the brakes could barely stop the car itself! ;)

In fact the Outback is rated at 2000 pound towing if the trailer has brakes. Dave Allen

I wonder if they added them in later model years. In any case, we were lucky.
Cheers! Fred

I used to be a frequent visitor 2 or 3 years ago, but now it is only about a couple legitimate posts a month showing up. Too many other forums nowadays, most of which have moderators and are focused on a local region, I suppose.
For example there are two other great usenet forums I used to visit frequently, rec.guns and rec.hunting. They are moderated with NO Spam or trolling tolerated. Several years ago they were averaging hundreds of new posts every day. But I guess there are too many competitors because there's only a trickle of posts each week nowadays.

Rec.guns has anywhere from 50 to 100 new posts per *day*, depending on how fast Magnum can approve the incoming messages in his moderation queue.
Dunno as how I'd consider that a "trickle"...
