Floor fasteners

Hi i have a 1975ish popup viscount camper.
The floor was a bit "spongey" in places so we lifted the lino up and found
several fasteners that hold the flooring onto the steel beams under the
flooring. They have a flat flush head on them and a hole in the centre of
the head, they look like big rivets. i havnt taken one out yet, the local
hardware store said they would'nt be rivets becuse rivets are made for metal
to metal contact and they would push through the wooden flooring when
compressed.
Anyone know if they are rivets, or how they are fastened to the beams and
what to replace with?

The camper top is down at the moment, i think they're approx 10mm across the
head.
Thanks

Gary

Just a guess. but they may be fasteners used in lots of (cheap)
furniture.  The big side is hammered into the wood (after the center
hole is drilled) - it has some teeth on the underside which grip the
wood - and they have threads inside the center hole.  Then a bolt is
screwed through the other piece of furniture (or the metal beam in your
case) into the center hole.  If you replace them, I would guess at least
the bolts should be stainless steel.

These are probably plastic fasteners that use a feathered pin to hold
them. They are used quite a bit in the automotive industry.
Try http://www.fastenal.com/ for these or look at Loews or Home Depot
for Auto fasteners in the specialty fastener cases you know where the
wing nuts are and the mirror clips etc.
Here is what they look like

Have you crawled under the camper and looked up at the underside?
If you see a bolt head, the "rivet" is a threaded fastener.
tobe - 23 Feb 2008 18:08 GMT
Does it look like the following examples of a T-nut?:

http://www.stafast.com/products/utnut.html
http://www.woodpeck.com/tnut.html

Usually these are used, for example, to attach legs to a table top, but
there are types that one can thread bolts into from the back side as well.

It looks like a 10mm flat aluminium pop rivet head whith a small hole in the
centre.
seeing as no one knows what is used, i'll try and pull one of the buggers
out today and let you all know what it is.

Well, i thought it was not good practice to send attachments in non binary
n/g.

You are correct.  Some folks will see it, and some folks will not, depending
on their Usenet server.  Folks with slow connections still are chagrinned
about having all that data come through slowly, but I do not personally see
this as a big issue any more.  I go with a good percentage of folks will not
see it as my concern.

I would recommend Flickr or Shutterfly.  Then post a link to it/them here.
This will be useful for you in other NGs too when you want to have folks
actually see what it is that you are talking about.  The old picture being
worth 1000 words thing.

I concur.  Some news servers won't carry it.

Flickr is a good choice.

I don't think so, timmy; does the name of this newsgroup contain the word
"binaries?"

If you want your online photos to actually be seen, know that a lot of ISPs
strip binary attachments that people try posting to non-binary newsgroups,
and rightly so.

Upload to Flickr or Shutterfly, and post a URL pointer here. That'd be good
Usenet etiquette.

Then, again, I have always wondered how one would POINT to a specific article
or articles:  Many a file is split across several or numerous articles.

Getting a free account on flickr is easy as is posting a photo and getting a
URL to it for posting elsewhere.

You shouldn't have to.

At least, not having a Shutterfly account (IOW, not really experienced there)
I would think you could copy some sort of "pointer" (URL) that you could post
here.  That's how I do it with my Flickr account, such as:

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1264/837412446_0f6ac5b870_b.jpg

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1006/836458865_daa4edb663_b.jpg

In shutterfly, the visitor may need to know your username there or something
and GO FIND the album.

Thanks for going to all the hassle!

Thanks Jim, i created a flickr account, hope these links work:

Shitty photo's but you get the idea, the rivets are tapered under the head
and slightly dished in on top.
The only ones i could find around the same size are flat UNDER the head and
rounded on top, i popped one in today, its holding but i think i need longer
ones. all good fun.

Is there a specific ng for camper diy repairs? we are doing one up, it's
old, but we don't have much money and are setting it up how we like it.

Thanks to all for suggestions/help.

They worked fine here!  Thanks.

I used common pop rivets for some of the repair on my popup camper and they
worked fine.

I really didn't "tune in" to your project until the [post photos] thing began
discussing.

I can't imagine any popup maker using a special or proprietary fastener for no
other reason than, when it comes to making popups, CHEAP is king.

> Is there a specific ng for camper diy repairs?

Not that I know of.

While I wouldn't do anything to divert traffic from this newsgroup, and I
suspect that most of those that are "worthwhile" from the other newsgroup I am
about to recommend also lurk here, feel free to try

<news:alt.rv>

You may be repairing/restoring a popup but probably most of the work you'll be
doing can be related to RVs in general.

> Thanks to all for suggestions/help.

Don't mention it.  It is a thrill to read new, TOPICAL stuff in this newsgroup.

Good luck with your project and please keep us posted on your progress.

The pics worked for me too.  I have no idea what your answer is now that I
see it.  What does the bottom of the thingy look like - threaded or solid?

Now that you are an expert on posting pictures, you have a skill that will
come in handy lots.

Take a look at these pop rivets they are a load-spreading  type that
may work for your purpose

Probably pop rivets.  You can get them with large heads, and they even sell
a washer to back up the rivet on softer materials.  They are just not for
metal to metal use.

Gary there are many types of blind fastaners on the market that any
manufacture may use but most are a type of rivet so that it is quick
to assamble in the factory. I would look under the trailer also and
then look around on the web for rivets or fastaners and i am sure you
will find it.
As for the floor feeling soft i have never been in a trailer yet that
there is not somewhere that this is not the case, with weight and
building cost in mind there is always something that could be done
better, but it always comes down to $$$$$$$$$$.

Happy Camping
