I'll retire in less than two years, and plan to then take the cross country
trip I've wanted for so long, including the Grand Canyon, and on to
California forests.  We're in upstate NY, and have made trips fine to
Kansas City, North Carolina, etc.  But, I'm wondering if our desired future
trip might be too much for towing a Viking pop-up (1502 lbs axle weight)
being towed by our Rendezvous without the trailer towing package.  This
does meet the towing specs for the Rendezvous as is, but is there too much
desert like driving, etc?

I'd suggest upgrading to the towing package if you're going to make that
kind of trip.  We opted to do so in our minivan (1997 Plymouth Voyager).
Otherwise we'd be too close to the edge of the towing capacity, and I
prefer a little margin just for safety's sake.

As for the desert driving issue, it depends on the time of year, also
the route you plan to take.  If you plan to go south, then west, that
means driving through TX, NM and AZ to get to the Grand Canyon.  Fairly
flat until you get into AZ where there's a not-too-bad climb to get to
Williams, AZ and the south rim of the Grand Canyon.  Can get to be
pretty warm across that stretch, also lots of miles between towns.  If
you plan to come down from Colorado/Utah to the north rim, then you're
talking about relatively steep grades and you'll definitely need the
towing package.

I just made the loop from Kansas City, Amarillo, Petrified Forest,
South Rim, North Rim, Zion, Bryce, and then back through Arches and
the Rockies.  We have a small Starcraft popup and a small Toyota
Highlander with tow package.

I would encourage you to have the towing package.  The transmission
cooler is a big help.  We have a V6 and it never ran hot.  WE were
there the end of June and start of July.

You will enjoy the trip.  Bryce and Zion are fantastic!
