Did any of you AOL users get a message that they are discontinuing newsgroups?

How do you non-AOL readers access these newsgroups?

I signed up for Usenet, but is it free somewhere.

Use a newsreader, such as Thunderbird, Outlook Express.
Much better than Web based access.

Use Thunderbird not Outhouse.  It make you look like a newby with the
top posting.

A: Maybe because some people are too annoyed by top-posting.
Q: Why do I not get an answer to my question(s)?
A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?

Try Free Agent.

After 30 days either buy it oyr it reverts to FREE Agent.
I used Free Agent for a couple years and really liked it.
Short but not difficult learning curve.

I think you'll find many different ways to read NG's. If you have a cable
connection, just open Outlook Express and search for NG's. I tried others,
but they were very complicated or cost me money. If you have a phone line,
take AOL's advice and try Google. There will be a small learning curve, but
nothing that can't be overcome. I haven't found a Newsreader I liked as well
as AOL, but Outlook Express isn't too bad. As a matter of fact, it has a few
things better and a few things worse than AOL.

Now, call AOL and complain, I did.

You need to have a news server and AOL should provide that.  Get the info
and then just set up one of the news programs mentioned in this thread.

Uhh, Jim - the geniuses [genii?] at AOL have decided to no longer offer
Usenet News Groups.

That's why the AOL users are exploring alternatives: AOL *will not have* any
news servers in the *very* near future.

There are a couple good paid ones (i've heard giganews and supernews are
good), and a free one (free one, german news server at news.individual.net
login and apply for a free acount), and a free web based newserver (google)

Biggest problem I hear is that some of the newsreaders people want to use on
their pc's, require an smtp mail server, and aol isn't one.. However, it's a
peice of cake to get a free email account at say hotmail, and then use that
as a mail server for forwarding and replying to news messages. If you apply
for an account (free) from the german news server, get the email address
FIRST, and use that when you fill out the form for a free account..

From another NG (rec.outdoors.rv-travel, huge thread there about "Regarding
AOL and USENET", with a lot of suggestions and answers)
For example, there where some people that wanted to use the forte
newsreader, and had to do something special to trick it into ignoring that
there was no smtp server....
I'm not sure why Agent needs a smtp server even if not sending via email,
but there is a faq about using Agent with AOL email-

I think if you go back over and read the message from Chris Bryant
you'll see that all he had to do was add "localhost" to the smtp
server block.  Of course you can use it to send mail less you use the
proxy mentioned above.  But I think most won't need to use mail from
Agent.  I may only use it once a month.

I use AOL and wasn't thrilled to see they are dumping the newsgroups.
When I found out I tried a few different free ones and settled on
Forte Agent (not the free one, the 30.00 one).  It's wonderful, I wish
I had switched years ago.

I did not need an email address.... in the email address place, under
SMTP I put in localhost and that did the trick.

I will not use Agent for my email, will just read it on AOL.

I wonder is AOL dropping their prices after dropping the
newsgroups?  Less product should mean a drop in price
or at least I thought so and that was the reason I dropped my cable
company.  What amazes me is people who will continue
to stay with the companies and then go out and pay additional fees to
other companies to get the dropped products they
had prior with their other company.

Somehow I just do not understand it but I guess it makes sense to
others, just my observation and not intended to offend
anyone.

I complained to AOL and asked for a discount since I am not receiving all
the "features" that were offered when i signed up. I haven't heard back and
probbaly won't hear. I will dump AOL if I can get my wife to agree. She is
still under the impression that it is ok. It will be a hard fought battle,
wish me luck!

Hi Hank

Heck just tell her you can't connect to AOL anymore and you don't
understand why but are going to get another provider just as good, or
explain to her that you pay the bills and you don't want to give your
money away to AOL anymore, but be ready to duck and run.  I am lucky my
wife wants nothing to do with the computer at all.  I did the same thing
with COMCAST and got negative results both with them as a provider for
Internet and my Cable TV Service and it did no good, so I said adios to
them and moved on.
Saved me a lot of frustration.  Fact is my Bell South DSL was cheaper
than my cable.  The new land line service are a lot better with the
accelerator service most of them offer now a days.  Netscape offers
theirs for $9.95 I think  or at least remember from TV.  The women seem
to like that chat thing on AOL.  Or is there another reason?

Don't you have cable? They make deals on pricing if you have them. When I
was with RR, my Earthlink went from $21.95 a month to free.

You may want to check the local RR website then. In SC there were 5
different ISP's that were free (for regular and dial-up service).

Why would I?  I don't want free, I want AOL.  I am happy with AOL.

Cuz one of the five at that time WAS free AOL, another was Earthlink, that's
how I got free Earthlink (I paid before RR, was free while I was with RR
The bill came with a credit from RR every month, balance due $0, and now I'm
back paying again) There where three others at the time, I don't recall what
they were

They may still be listed under member services.. was supposed to encourage
new members, but current users got a credit every month that they were with
RR.

I'm not suggesting you CHANGE anything, just check to see if you can get a
free credit on your AOL bill, for having the cable thing.
Hunter - 29 Jan 2005 02:24 GMT
>I'm not suggesting you CHANGE anything, just check to see if you can get a

I did that once, but then I got a huge bill when I used dial up when I
was away from the cable....and my computer was on the blink.  I
couldn't use the cell phone with my old back up laptop..... that's
remedied now.

So, I got the 14.95 with full service so I never have to worry about
minutes. I had to sign up for it for a year.

I've had AOL for many years and I know all the choices and pricing
plans.... I have the one I want.

Since I am new to this NG, I can see we are going to have problems. :-)

I too have been with AOL for many years. I like AOL, contrary to what all
the computer gurus's say. But, AOL has a problem with NG's. Why is that? For
years there wasn't any problem. Now all of a sudden there is. I guess if
they can't fix it, they just do away with it. Oh well!

Anyway, back to my rant, I lost cable (roadrunner) for about a week from an
ice storm. So I went online via the phone line. I got a separate bill from
AOL for the phone line usage. I called them and they gladly credited my
account. You could probably do the same. At least try!

By the way, are you still posting to NG's from AOL?

Was it because you went to a Cable connection?

Nope, you have very limited dial up hours when you go to their
broadband package. I live in my camper fulltime and sometimes need
lots of landline hours.

It was a brief window of opportunity that I heard about and jumped on.
I did have to agree to another year of service.

When the whole uproar started about AOL dropping the groups I tired a
bunch of different readers and I'm crazy about Agent. The way I see it
AOL did me a favor.

I have lots of web pages on AOL and it's been my email address forever
(9 years I think) So there's no chance I'll be switching.

I have gotten pissed at them in the past and switched to earthlink,
but I always go back to AOL.

Hi Hunter,

I find it interesting that, while I occasionally disagree with you,
your posts are informative and friendy (normally).  I also notice that
there exists an air of friendly banter between you and others.

It is too bad the same cannot be said of jenny.  She seems to exist to
be the contrarian.

Thanks, I don't usually walk into a room looking for a fight. I think
of *most* of the people on the RV groups as friends I've not yet met.
I have met some of course and haven't been disappointed.

Sorry.. it's AOL.. Seems there battle cry is "Less Service and more
fees!"....

Too be fair, and not to just pick on AOL, Netzero used to be free ($0 a
month, hence netzero), now it's at least $9.95 a month....Access 4 Free
<---- used to be free...... but is now $4.95
Guess everybody is jumping on the less for more bandwagon.... :)
