I'm planning to hit the road aboard my Rexhall this spring. I'll make a big
"continental loop" from my home in California, along the Gulf Coast to
Florida, then up to Maine, then across the northern states and back home.
I'll be taking a route that takes me through the most states possible. Some
states I'm going to just barely "nick" on my route. (Gotta fill up that
little US map on the back of my motorhome!)
I'll be taking US Highways, avoiding the interstates as much as possible.
I'll also avoid all the big cities on this loop. I prefer two lane roads and
small towns over the superslabs and big cities.
I plan to avoid state hiways, driving on nothing less than the US highways
as I've encountered pretty bad state and county roads on prior trips. And
living in California, I've had it with bad roads.
I'll be doing a lot of "Wally-Docking" enroute, and also will be accepting
the welcome from other freebies such as CrackerBarrel, Flying J, etc.
I'll be spending most of my money on gas, damn it! But hey, this is the time
in my life that I can make this grand loop, so I'm gonna go for it.
Any comments or advice on such a trip? I'm hoping for blue skies and calm
winds the whole trip. Yeah, right!

I have found many state highways and even county road to be as good or
better than the superslabs though two lane. Back east of Big Muddy,
all the highways seem to get narrow, worse the farther east you go.
Remember that Hwy. 99 and many other superslabs in CA are state
highways.

Guess you will be doing all this in 3-4 weeks? Slow down some. Smell
the roses. Take along a little more money and stay in at least one
campground.

My wife and I did a trip about half as long and took 11 weeks.
I felt like I was in a hurry all the time. This sounds like a 6
month trip at least, especially if the route is on US highways
which are much slower than the interstates. We always opt for
the US highway system if we can.
Have fun.

We just did a 8 month loop with our Rexhall, had a great time but spreading
out the trip over time helped to spread out the fuel bill as well. Had a
great time. Depending on the time you are taking I preferred reversing the
direction you are planning. All summer long we only had two days we were in
places over 100 degrees and came back across the south in fall and winter.
If you can slow down and smell the flowers.
