If your rig gets 6-8 mpg ,  will the gas prices force you to take much
shorter trips or, change your plans ?

NO.

I will probably stay longer at more of my stops. At 200 miles a day it
figures to @ $50 for fuel. More than a GOOD campground in most cases.

No, but then I average a whopping 9.8+ mpg with my diesel Chevy 3500 when
towing our 35' triple slide 5er.  We were in Washington and Oregon last May
and June and paid an average of $2.22 a gallon for diesel then.  After the
first few fill ups the shock wore off and it was no longer a big deal.

And I average 9.5 mpg with my Hemi pulling our 30'
superslide trailer. It probably cost $50 more to get back
home this year, compared to what it cost to go south. That's
for 1350 miles one way.

HD,

What kind of tow vehicle do you have? I've got a 05 1500
RAM with the HEMI and just returned from a trip to central
Florida 2700 miles/around trip. I got about 9-10 MPG. We are
thinking about getting a new 28' TT with a slide out. Right
now I have a 26' Springdale but no slide out.

Meghan and I have been planning a great circle tour of the western states
from our home in New York for next fall.  Planning began long before the
current runup in fuel prices.  Looks like prices will be a dollar or more a
gallon higher than last time we took this trip.  For an 11,000 mile trip
that will run us about $1000 more than our last trip two years ago.  We will
still take the trip, but might start taking these long RV trips every three
years rather than every two years.  $2500 in fuel cost is a good chunk of
money, though not enough to stop us from going.

It's an '03 Ram 1500, Quad Cab, short box with the Hemi and
tow package. We tow a 2000 Holiday Rambler 29fks (29' 11"),
7,000 lbs empty.

This trailer is the only model we've seen with a unique
layout. The kitchen is on the front curb side, entertainment
system, storage cabinets above and below with the pantry on
the front road side and will hold a lot. The dinette is in
front in the slide out and the sofa is to the rear of the
slide out. The front entrance door is just rear of the
fridge and has a large area where my recliner resides. I
also have room for a table with integral lamp which lives
next to my recliner. This holds my catalogs and Bible. We've
looked at a lot of trailers and, with the exception of the
rear living room models of both trailers and 5th wheels,
this is the most livable we've seen.

not at the current price level.  sure, there's a point at which it
will force us to curtail our travel plans but i think we're a long way
from that point.

The price of fuel is a tiny portion of the cost of RVing- though it can be
a shock when it comes time to fill an 80-150 gallon tank, but...

The thing which *will* (IMHO) affect the general RVer is if fuel shortages
develop. People do *not* want to get stuck away from home waiting in
lines for fuel.

Since I rarely use more than 10 gallons of gasoline on a 1,000 mile trip, I
don't see a gasoline price hike as a "show stopper". <g>

I _have_ heard that _some_ people actually use the stuff for something
other than washing parts and/or fuelling a generator. <G>
