Just got back from a trip to central Florida from Southern
New England. I've been making this trip at least once a
year for the last 15 years. Its taking me longer and longer
each year. This year it took me about 25 hours. On the way
home, 26 hrs. I always leave very early in the morning and
pass through NY and Washington at off peak hours. 95 is
getting worse and its amazing its still a 2 lane road in
most of NC, SC and GA. On the trip down, there was a truck on
its side with limes on the road. The good thing was it was
on the North side. It blocked the entire road and it was
backed up about 12 miles. My wife and kids were quite happy
it wasn't us. Well, on the way home a camper flipped on its
side. Very windy day. Blocked the entire North lane. 45 mins
sitting on 95 and no where to go. On the way home, I decided
to take 64 outside of Richmond to 81 to 84. Never took this
route before. What a mess on 81 at 78. I finally got off at
22 which helped quite a bit. I have MS Streets but nothing
was noted on the construction found at 81 & 78. I do travel
to and home during the weekends. Perhaps I should travel during
the weekday?

I typically do this route. 84 in CT, 684, 87 to the GSPW to
the NJ Tpk, 295 over the Del. River back on 95, 695 around
Baltimore, 95, 495 around Washington, 95 to central Florida.
I'm towing with LP tanks.

Any other suggestions for a better route? 64 on the way home
wasn't bad but the hills in PA were horrible. The best time
I've done this trip is about 21 hrs.

Any thoughts on better updated construction information?
Road construction is the worse I've seen.

Thanks,
gary

Hi,
The route you normally take is about the shortest in distance, but
probably the heaviest traffic wise.  There is NO time when the
Washington loop is a good drive.  87 to the GSPW and the Jersey pike
usually isn't very wide open either :)

The construction at I-81/I-78 is suppose to take a few more years I
believe.  Construction is not normally shown in mapping programs.  you
can go on the states web site you intend to travel through and usually
find out the latest construction schedules.  Then use the mapping
programs to avoid them.

The worse traffic is usually around Richmond and Washington.  Going
north on I-95.  If you take the Richmond bypass and then take I-95 to
exit 133 and take Route 17/15 west to I-66 west to I-81 north to I-78
east to Rt 22 then to Rt 33 north to I-84 at Port Jervis.  The climb
up out of Port Jervis on I-84 is a nice grade too.  But that would
probably be the quickest way.  The only road I'm not sure about is
route 33.  Haven't been that way in years so I don't know what it's
like.  It's at least as good as Rt 22.  All the others I've traveled
in my MH.  In fact the I-66 to Rt 17/15 to I-95 to I-64 east is the
way we go to and from the shore every year.

When going south I like to take I-81 to I-77 to I-26 to I-95.  Only
bad spot traffic wise is Charlotte which can be a bear if you hit it
at the wrong time.  You do hit some hills in Virginia going that way
too and get to see the nice view from Fancy Gap if the weather is
clear, while going down the mountain.

You didn't even hit any of the bigger hills in Pa. by the way :)  If
you stayed on I-81 north you would have hit a few grades :)

Take care and Happy Campin...

Join AAA and get a trip tick. In an ideal world AAA would let members
download construction info to our mapping programs. Unfortunately AAA's
association with Delorme is long gone. Hmmm! maybe I'll write a letter with
my next renewal.

You are joking aren't you.  At least the AAA trip tics are.

Not the answer yet, but an interesting site.
