REQ:  Need help with Atwood 8535 III furnace

I have a 1998 Prowler with a Atwood 8535 III furnace that is giving me
trouble.
When I first get to the campground,  I set the thermostat on AUTO and
temperature at a high enough temperature, and nothing happens - no fan
- no burner (of course).  Other times the furnace comes on just fine.

Then if the furnace does come on, when the room temperature reaches
full warmth,  the gas burner will kick off, and the fan will stop a
short time later.  This is normal of course, but sometimes the fan
will not kick off - even if I then set the thermostat to 'off'.  In
those cases I have to pull the fuse to get the fan to shut off.

This is where I stand::

1) I think there is no problem with the gas part - the burner will
always fire up if the fan comes on first.  And the burner will always
shut off properly.

2) The thermostat has three wires going to the furnace -
   Ground
  +12V always
+12V when heat is set on auto

3) Even though I thought the thermostat was okay, I still bought a new
one and installed it (Coleman Mach).  Did not make any improvement.

I see there is a relay (?time delay?) hanging on the fan motor.  My
thinking is that it must be bad and/or sticking.

Do you guys out there think replacement will solve my problem?  If so,
can you direct me to a site to buy same?

My predicament is that my trailer is permanent, and so dealer service
would be prohibitive whatwith a 100-mile trip one-way and all.  I
could pull the furnace out and deliver it to the dealer, but he has
already said it will cost at least $250 plus driving charge.  Wow!
The dealer does not have (or says he doesn't) a relay and would have
to 'order' it.

Well that's it!  I await any words of wisdom.

That sounds like a winner- I would definitely replace the relay. Marks RV
has a replacement- http://marksrv.com/hydroflameparts.htm#tdr  - note that
the replacement he is listing here is not really the Hydroflame part
number (it's a Suburban number), but I trust him enough that I would be
comfortable using it (he used to be a regular here).

Thanks

I'll take a look at marksrv.  I guess his relay should be compatible.

Think I should get a sail switch to?

While you probably do not need it- I really would- given the
handling/shipping charges should be the same for both (if they are much
higher, I wouldn't).

I have a different furnace but found the Atwood site quite helpful. In
addition there is this little movie (there might even be one for your
model) helpful in explaining how it all works. You can download it from
there or I can forward it but it is 1.75megs in size. Let me know if you
want me to send it.....Nick

If you don't mind, Nick.  I have broadband, so size is no factor on
this end.

Thanks

You must be having a problem or are busy. That's ok.   I cannot find
Atwood's site with the movie as a download.  Can you send me the URL?

It should be http://atwoodmobile.com/Service/Trouble/default.cfm

I bought one relay and one sail switch - went to campground this long
weekend.  The relay solved my problem.  Thank you.

Just in passing - does it matter which of the four relay leads are
connected to which of the wires?  Nothing is lapelled of course.

Now then, my camping neighbor has and has had a furnace problem for
some time,  It is a Suburban Hydra flame.  His acts differently from
mine.  His fan runs okay when he activates the furnace via the
thermostat.  Sometimes, but not very often, the burner will come on
and produces toasty heat.  Most of the time though, the burner will
not come on.  I tested his sail switch and found it had good
continuity when closed, and passed voltage when it was supposed to
(fan on).  I even tried my new sail switch to no avail.

I suppose it could be the board (expensive!) or the gas valve itself.
What do you guys think?

Thanks

Big G
