Toad wiring question.

Hi,
I'm in process of mounting my baseplate to my Toyota echo. Pretty straight
forward process.

Now, for the wiring, I have a prewired 4 pin standard Trailering harness.
Can I tap into this and back feed to make the turn signals and brake lights
function?

I'm thinking male 4-pin straight to female 4pin round to match the rear of
the motorhome.

Any thoughts or suggestions?
Or links to a toyota wiring schematic?

TIA.

Hi,
With new cars it's not a good idea to just wire into their lighting
circuits.  You should put diode's in to separate the power so you
don't back feed into the cars computer system.  You need to wire in
for the stop lights, turn signals and running lights and you need a
ground wire too.  Usually a 6 or 7 pin plug is used.  See the
following site for more information.  www.rverscorner.com/wiring/

The way that is done is you get a diode with two inputs and one
output.  One input is wired into the cars original wiring, the other
input is wired into the RV's wiring the output goes to the light.
Doing that one cannot back feed to the other.  You need to get a diode
for each light, 2 stop, 2 turn and 1 for the running lights.

They do sell wiring kits.  Usually wherever you get your hitch or base
plate from will have them.  They come with pretty complete
instructions for wiring and include the diodes, plugs etc.

Your other option is to buy a stick on light bar with the stop and
turn and marker lights and wire directly from the RV to it.  You can
usually get those from where you buy your hitch or baseplate or most
RV dealers.

Take care and Happy Campin...

I saw that there are wiring kits available just not brand/model specific.
I understand the "Gate theroy" of diodes.

I thought since I had a wiring harness added for towing with the Echo that I
could tap into it and save myself some work.

Thanks,
Ed

Not sure about this.  On my Toyota Pickup, I had to buy an adapter because
on foreign vehicles, the turn signals and brake lights and running lights
have one more circuit than on American cars.  You have one more bulb.

So, on the adapter FROM a foreign vehicle say, to a trailer, you have to
install the adapter, which involves running a hot wire from the battery on
back.

Not gonna swear that a toad requires special adapter, but I know that to
wire a trailer to a Toyota, one is required.

I agree, the adapter Car to trailer is installed I thought I might be able
to tap into it prior to the adapter to get the cars lights to light and
avoid the diode install kit (as I thought that this is what is already
there.

Ed,
Have you posted your question in ( alt.autos.toyota) ?  I think you may
reach a few more echo owners. I have had nice responces there.
Just a thought.
