Sheesh.
I am buying a laptop. I got some pretty good reports on Toshiba Satellite
805's. Called Fry's, the local computer electronic supermarket, and it
seems they are obsolete already. They got newer better models.
Isn't this pace of advancement incredible?
1 gig keychain memory sticks
200 gig hard drives
1024 mb RAM
wifi
the speed of transmission
When I think back 5, 10 years, it seems like it was 100 by looking at the
advancements. Can't wait for the next ten years.
It's a good time to be alive regardless of what the bloggers say. Life is
good.

I'd mentioned that they'd renamed their models since I got mine... <g>
When I bought this one it was their top-of-the-line multi-media laptop and,
two years later, it still holds its own for performance. [2.5 GHz, 512Mb,
60Gb, 16.1", etc.]
When on the road, it occupies the "console" seat-back to provide moving map
displays to the "navigator" [when she isn't doing jigsaw puzzles or watching
movies on it].

Steve,
I have a Toshiba laptop that I use all day, every day in the RV and I
like it a lot. There is only one problem: I got one of those powerful
desktop replacement models with the full Pentium 4 processor and it
generates a LOT of heat. Mid-afternoon the sun hits the "office"
area of the RV and the A/C struggles to keep the place cool. The small
fan and compact case of the laptop can't get rid of the heat fast
enough and the laptop just shuts down without warning. I did some
research to see if there is at least a way it could warn me, but I
haven't found anything. According to Toshiba, this is a protective
mechanism to prevent parts from being fried.
Just yesterday I went to Wal-Mart and got a small desk fan. I have it
blowing air behind the laptop. We'll see today if that cools it
enough so it stays running.
So far I'm impressed with the resiliency of Windows XP, because it
has not corrupted or lost any data from the shutdowns. I am in the
habit of saving my work often, so no loss of work either.
Anyway, just wanted to say that a Toshiba is a good choice, but you may
have to watch the heat, unless you get the mobile Pentium processor.

That's been a problem with Toshibas for quite awhile. I serviced a few
of them a couple of years ago (and owned one about five years ago) and
all of them were prone to shut down because of the heat. This is not
something I've seen with the Dell or IBM desktop replacements. I've got
two Dells with P4 and while they do get warm, there's nothing like the
heat generated by the Toshiba and they have never shut down due to
overheating.

Check out the Targus coolpads at

I've seen them for sale at BestBuy. I don't have one and haven't found the
need although I travel with a Toshiba laptop with a 3.6 GHz processor
sitting in the passenger seat of the truck running Streets and Trips 2005
with GPS.
